Are you serious? You know the answer already.. no engine plays them vey well. You're best chance will be with Rybka 3 and a strong multi-cpu hardware to overcome the horizon effect as much as possible.

I've seen your previous test position... you seems like a strong player (by corespondence chess if only). What did you expect here..?

I ask for the best engines amongst other engines. I know they don't play them very well but I'd like to know which ones are the less bad.

Rybka 3 and Hiarcs 12 are currently the best commercial engines so i think they play closed positions better than other engines.

Deep Fritz 11, Junior 11 (Junior is also not bad in closed positions) and Shredder 12 should also be released sometime before the end of this year.

Then go for Rybka 3 on a strong hardware. I know no special engine able to understand pawn chains. Otherwise, ask M. Tord R. to update its new Glaurung 2.1 software to take into account pawn phalanx and space advantage. To my knolwledge, only Glaurung 1.2.1, disd take care of space advantage. I'm not sure about the pawn phalanx however.

By that logic Zappa Mexico and Naum3 should also be good in closed position.

Believe it or not........ for being able to play closed positions I liked the W chess engine found in the old Power chess programs. If I remember correctly the Power Chess program was originally going to be called Nimzovich or some such which may say something.....

He could try the Chessthinker active version, which is better with closed positions that humans try against computers. I dont know how well it fares against engines on fast hardwares, but I have seen it win many times in dead drawn positions. Ulysses, didnt you post a trick few days ago to make Thinker analyze?

If by analyze you meant "make Thinker show scores", then yes. If you don't know how to analyze by only using scores for the moves then it's useless (as the PV is unreliable and Infinite analysis doesn't work.)
