Rybka 3 - Crafty 22.1 Single CPU

Just for fun and to see the style of new Rybka 3 i played a short 20-games match between Rybka 3 32-bit versus Crafty 22.1 32-bit.

Games was with 10 predefined positions with alternating colors. No books of course.
Time control was 4+2" and Hash tables was 256 MB.

Result was completely one-sided:

Rybka's 3 style is completely different than that of its predecessor Rybka 2.3.2a. Rybka 3 is much more forceful and tactically MUCH stronger. Actually most of the times it kept the move it have chosen in the first second and played it at the end. Knowledge of Rybka 3 seems amazing.
It seems too aware.
Crafty 22.1 showed an average of about +2 ply more all the time. Yet what i find stunning is that Rybka's evaluation almost never dropped between moves. Always increasing.

Crafty's time management seemed a bit better than Rybka's generally, except a most critical point: The instant-move feature of Rybka were it is amazing and saves a lot of time.
I noticed at least 2 positions where the move for Rybka was critical but it didn't spent enough time while it had a lot. I noticed also many positions were Rybka played after a tiny time thinking while this was unnecessary.
Crafty did similar time management mistakes although its time handling was more steady and predictable.

I used "timebook 80 8" for Crafty and i don't know if this help it or if it hurt it or if it was insignificant.

In one interesting position white had Queen and Pawn for 2 Bishops and Knight of black.
Rybka with white managed to win with some very strong moves that forced the game to an endgame of white Rook versus Knight+Bishop but with weak black Pawns and unstoppable passers of white. Rybka as black in the same position, used its BBN versus Q advantage to create an attack to the King.

Yes Rybka 3 is incredibly strong. The combination of deeper search and a dramatically improved evaluation is a lethal combination.

I tried installing Crafty but it crashes and tells me my processor is SMP, not NUMA...

I read that
Rybka has also depth of 0 and -1 and -2 at the lowest levels so I guess that you need to add at least 3 to rybka's depth.

Except this I believe that the effective branching factor of rybka3 increased relative to previous version because rybka3 does more extensions relative to 2.3.2a.

Of course it does not mean nothing and you cannot compare depths of different programs even if they are correct.

It seems obvious to me that part of rybka's advantage relative to Crafty is better search.
