The Halloween Gambit could actually be sound!

Post by Eraserheads »

I was looking for some practical uses for Rybka 3, and this is my first fruit.

My idea of handicapping Rybka is not by taking off a Knight or pawn, but allowing Rybka to play dubious or unsound openings. The purpose is twofold:

1) By allowing Rybka to handle these dubious openings, one is able to magnify the merits of these gambits and take away the 'impurities' of the opening.
2) To see whether Rybka can use these offbeat openings with success. (Thereby providing valuable material for practical use)

I tried pitting Rybka 3 as White using the Halloween Gambit against the likes of Chess Tiger 14, 15, Crafty, Junior 7, 10, HIARCS 8-9-10, Shredder 7.04, Shredder9, and other strong freewares and Rybka demolished them all, without losing or drawing a single game. I am now tempted to conclude that the Halloween Gambit is sound! The position White gets if Black accepts the gambit is almost too good!

I merged some main games into one PGN

Hi Micheal,

Do you mind if I ask what hardware were you using? I don't think the gambit is sound, but it is playable. :?: :!:

Thanks

You cannot decide if the gambit is sound based on blitz games against opponents that are significantly weaker.

You need to play rybka-rybka games and longer time control to get an opinion about it and no game of your games followed the main line of rybka3.ctg(5...Ng6 6.e5 Ng8 7.Bc4 d5)

It might be sound (ie White not lose) but not for an advantage, there are many ways to return the piece and get acceptable position for Black.
The trouble with computers as Black is that they want to win so they move their Knights onto horrible squares.
It would be interesting to see how R3 handles black against R3.
Then next there will be the Cochrane gambit Nxf7 in the Petroff to test.

Steffen Jakob (author of Hossa) was looking at this opening quite a bit.

Why don't you clean the useless informations before posting (copy and paste) your game ?

Having {
[%emt 0:00:08]}

is useless. I am sure most of readers would like a proper pgn file to read. You show irrespect by not making the effort to make it easy to read.

Note : This also applies to others people acting in the same way. For instance, posting hundreds of lines without properly formatting the text.

is useless. I am sure most of readers would like a proper pgn file to read. You show irrespect by not making the effort to make it easy to read.

Note : This also applies to others people acting in the same way. For instance, posting hundreds of lines without properly formatting the text.
It only useless if you don't use Chessbase products. In the Chessbase interfaces it shows the thinking time spent on the move.

If "sound" means struggling as white for draw with two pawns for a piece, it might be sound. I call that unsound.

Sorry Michael,but my opinion is that the Halloween gambit is a pure sample of suicide when playing strong human or silicon opponents....you are simply disadvantaging yourself from the very begining of the game....
As a surprise weapon against weak opponents can be taken under consideration....
