It is a dedicate unit rated, supposedly, 2294. In fact it is a 2000 elo machine or around that strenght.
I draw the game after very difficult moments when I though my attack had backfired and I was going to lose. For some moves I was three pawns behind, BUT I had an "a" pawn advanced enough to finally justify so heavy loses. In fact I sacrifices two of those three lost pawns in order to keep my chances. Finally the "a" pawn became a queen and a draw was accorded as much I was not capable of getting an edge againts a rook and three extra pawns. In fact even with the queen it was neccesary careful manouvering to get the draw in that conditions. No doubt any engine would have crushed me, but then this is the point I wanted to do here: the lovely thing of these pretty machines is that they give you a chance as a real human being does in a club.
So a game is LOT more interesting and exciting, full of chances, changes, drama, soap opera and even farse.

Re: Playing Karpov 2294 machine....
My son and I played the Sapphire II against the Karpov 2294.
I told him the ratings suggest a 55% chance of the Sapphire winning
and a large probability of a draw.
During the game, each side had moments of controlling an edge.
The Karpov was white and lost its edge to the Sapphire then the
game flipped and flipped again. Finally, the Karpov had the winning
endgame and won.
It was a neat game to watch and the Karpov was fun to play.
My son likes it. He says it is a pretty unit. However, he and I
play the Fidelity A/S Budapest the most - that is when we are
personally playing.

it is fun to play the old computers
at least i can understand what is going on as opposed to the 3000+ Elo engines which play a type of chess that is strange to me
i matched the Excalibur Phantom Force against the Saitek Team Mate Advanced Trainer the other day
the PF is rated about 1700 and the Team Mate about 1600
the game was a wild Melee with the P.Force up a Q for B+N and then the TM came roaring back to be only the exchange down..but lost eventually in the endgame when the Force promoted a pawn
its not Rybka running on 40 cores v Hiarcs.. but it is fun
When computer chess was once fun regards

If you are not curious to see where you or the machine might have made some wrong moves, even VERY wrong moves, then good for you!fern wrote:It is a dedicate unit rated, supposedly, 2294. In fact it is a 2000 elo machine or around that strenght.

You are easily satisfied.
But your analisys might be wrong, but it might have only worked out OK because both you and the machine think wrong things. But if you don't need to know the truth, then, very good! You're lucky that this makes you happy enough.
I once beat Turbo King with an astounding bishop sacrifce and King hunt, aboout 12 moves deep till mate. I took a long time over every move, checking and re-checking.
Still, ANY machine from the last few years will IMMEADIATELY see somewhere in the middle of that king hunt, that there is a simple move which defends the whole thing, and therefore the bishop sacrifice was in fact a silly move throwing away the bishop.

Re: Playing Karpov 2294 machine....
I have the emerald classic that i bought in maybe april of 1997, that was by novag and rated about 2290 as i recall. I also think that rating was inflated and its probably at least 200 points lower. I think to get those ratings they would play like 50 or 60 games at a tournament agaisnt uscf rated players, maybe 30 0 or something and offer them 50 bucks if they beat it and then take a calculation of the rating after the 50 games. in 97 people had less experience with computers, and playing one game may favor the computer because people ( particualry those not used to it ) might blunder were if they played 6 games they might get into a rythm and see how to beat it. I see this in ICS play with my computer program, A guy might lose the first 2 or 3 but then suddenly he has some things figured out and is winning 4/5.
My question is i believe the emerald classic and the karpov classic are the same computer. I remember a few months after i bought the emerald classic that it was no longer carried and in its place was teh karpov classic. Teh drawing had them looking almost identical, a brownish beigh board area that was more wide and rectangular than square, and the same rating it seemed. I thought at the time that they had secured rights to use the karpov name for the emerald classic and had renamed it and maybe the emerald classsic name was just a name used early on tell they could secure a better name/marketing idea.

Hi Mike
not sure what you mean by Karpov Classic?
if you mean the Karpov 2294 then it is the same exact computer as the Emerald Classic PLUS(different from the normal Emerald Classic)
see here:

Re: Playing Karpov 2294 machine....
Are there substantial differences between teh emerald classic and the emerald classic plus ( ak karpov 2294). I noticed in 97 when i bought the emerald classic that the ratings appaered to be almost identical with the emerald classic being marketed at 2290 and the look of the machines similar. At the time i bought it there were 3 computers around the 2200s. i think they were the diamond and saphire ( one was a board the other maybe a hand held) and they were like 2240. the emerald classic seemed to be the upgrade at 2290. and then the karpov 2294 came along some months later. Emerald Classic plus i never heard of.
