For an engine (assume 2700 elo) with no extra features, Which one would would you most wish to see implemented first?

Engine's Feature

Post by swami »

Some authors decide to implement either of these things at random, but It would help knowing what feature people would want most. This is just a fun poll. :)

I voted Personality Creator.

However, I'd like better "Showing PV lines and score while the engine is thinking", for Thinker. ;)

Personality creator gives you infinite engines to play with :)

Actually I would enjoy adjustable game personalities where I could use one personality for moves 1-10, and another for 11-20, etc. I guess ProDeo tried this, but would be interesting to try a tournament that way to see what happens.

Talk about the infinite scenarios one could create!

I tried this back then, with ProDeo 1.2 I think. I ran a tourney with several personalities including a Master.eng that had 9 specific personalities to be used in different situations.

I don't remember the details, but silver.eng(Search & Destroy v6.7 modified by Ed Schröder) won that tourney and Master.eng didn't do anything impressive.

It's still worth it for fun, someone should create a polyglot or WB2UCI adapter that chooses what engine to use depending on the situation of the board, or picks a different engine on odd and even moves. The idea is to be able to use any chess engine like this, even more scenarios for the fun of it ;)

Were they all ProDeo personalities? The endless possibilities would make that fun.

Now how about an "engine of engines"? I have read here that some praise Ktulu on the endgame, and Hiarcs for its knowledge, etc. A chess Mutual Fund perhaps?

Ahh but Rybka would probably beat any combination of those put together :)

Yes.

That's the problem. This idea would have worked back with Rybka 2.3.2a, because that Rybka played really bad the opening, so the strategy would have been to get out of book as soon as possible, then get on the engine that is best on the opening, then the middle game, etc. One in case we're losing that is best at saving the game, and one to secure the win once you're winning.

That was theoretically possible, but no chance against Rybka 3. It still could be tried for fun, but I'm no programmer.
