Strongest Toga at long TC?

Post by Stephen Ham »

Dear readers,

I have several Toga versions. I was advised awhile ago that the strongest versions were Toga II 1.4.1SE and Toga II 3.1.2SE. Of these two, I have a slight preference for the former in longer time-controls.

But recently I've seen different and apparently more recent Toga versions mentioned. Are they stronger at longer time-controls? If so, then which version seems strongest and what's the evidence? Where can one download stronger Toga versions?

Thanks in advance.

All the best,
Steve

Toga II 1.4.1SE is the latest I know of and still the strongest at longer time controls (just).

Graham.
Have tested the free version of Rybka v.2.2n2mpw32.

Thanks,

Gerold.

Is it much stronger than Toga II 3.1.2SE? If not, I'd choose style over strength 8-)

Minimal difference. The margin of error in their respective ratings means that they're pretty equal to be honest.

Stephen,

As Graham mentioned, only Toga 1.4.1 SE at the moment has some solid proof based on testing made at CCRL - 40/40.

http://www.computerchess.org.uk/ccrl/40 ... t_all.html

Much of the Toga testing were only made on shorter time controls (see 40/4 at CCRL). There you'll see the performance of the Toga versions against the other engines. There's not much difference and results may vary. We need more games to have a precise prediction of strength.

But I recommend you could try the following available Togas too in case you haven't :
1. Grapefruit 1.0 alpha 3- very fast search and speed by Vadim Dem (aka Thinkingalot)
2. Cyclone 2.1- by Norman Schmidt
3. Toga 1.4.2JD - by Jerry Donald based on Toga 1.4.1SE
4. Toga CMLX by Teemu Pudas

The free Rybka (2.2n2) is still the leader. Toga, Fruit, Glaurung, Thinker and Bright are the other free engines next to it. And strength-wise, it's difficult to say who's best.

Good luck to your testing!

Sorry Swami, I forgot. But there's not much difference as the update is just for polyglot book support.

And just to add too. I forgot to mention the strong Toga Checkov versions of Eelco de Groot and the publicly released version of LearningToga by William Mowery Jr. at TDDB before he made a vacation. It isn't that strong that's why there's not much news. But development is still alive at the moment.

Thanks.
