Problem with Crafty 22.7 in EGTB situation (infin. analysis)

Post by ernest »

I use Jim Ablett's crafty227_win32_ja.exe in Fritz11 GUI, with Wb2uci interface, all 5-men EGTBs. Infinite analysis.

No problem (sort of works...) with [d] 4k3/8/r2K4/3B2RP/8/8/8/8 w - - 0 76
Analysis by Crafty 22.7 32bit:
77.Bc6+ Kf7 78.Rg6 Kf8 79.h6 Ra7 80.Rg4 Rf7 81.Bd5 Rd7+ 82.Kc6 Ke8 83.Rg8+
+- (19.34) Depth: 14 00:00:02 11818kN

+- (22.74) Depth: 15 00:00:02 12376kN
77.Bc6+ Kf7 78.Rg6 Rb6 79.Kd7 Kf8 80.Bd5 Rxg6

-+ (-#2738) Depth: 17 00:00:26 135mN

but notice the strange (and negative) mate scores.

But on this position [d] 4k3/6RP/3KB3/8/8/8/3r4/8 w - - 0 76
no way to start Crafty's infinite analysis: Depth stays at 1

Wb2uci apparently doesn't know how to translate Crafty's mate scores, which isn't surprising since I don't think there is a standard for that in the Winboard protocol.

For the no output problem, have you tried putting

Code: Select all

noise 0
in the crafty.rc file?

Thanks, Greg, indeed this has to do with analysis display: the "noise 0" command unblocked the position I mentioned, but 2 moves later, again no analysis was displayed, with Depth indicating 5 this time :-)

I also notice that I can't get rid of the Log files, despite putting log=off in crafty.rc

For the log problem, something else is wrong. I play 500,000 games a day on our cluster. With nary a log.nnn file created unless I remove the log=off, in cases where I want to see the logs. It sounds like somehow the setting for noise 0 is getting reset somewhere, probably related to the gui. You might try crafty by itself to test the log issue and the output issue. If it works correctly by itself, and I'll bet it will, then the problem lies somewhere between Crafty and the GUI.

I do see the depth stopping at five two plies later, but Crafty does show the analysis to that depth (using Winboard). If you're not seeing any output at all it's probably an incompatibility with the GUI. Two plies deeper still it only goes to depth four, and only shows one move in the PV followed by <EGTB>. This is a design choice, so to follow the rest of the line you'll have to play the moves.
