CC11 Operators

Post by playwaycool »

This is directing to all members on this forum. Perhaps making a topic about it might be easier to get an attention to most active members in here, I just feel it might be a good idea to see if any of you have any interest to be an operator for any chess program you may own and wish to enter in the CCT11 event (http://sites.google.com/site/cctchess/r ... egulations)

I'm not really an active member in the forum so most of you may not know me too well. I decided to volunteer to be an operator for both Glaurung & Ktulu in CCT10 and in the upcoming CCT11. Both Tord Romstad and Rahman Paidar doesn't know me at all, but i saw that both programs never enter the CCT at all, never made any appearance so I decided to see whether I would be able to get a permission from at least one of them to join, I messaged Tord and emailed Rahman. Both authors were nice to me and didn't mind me to join. I did join CCT10 and I made up an opening book just for the event and i did get to meet some folks in the tournament on ICC and did enjoy watching Glaururng/Ktulu along watching others and seeing and getting involve in the discussions between operators and authors in ICC channel or in private tells during the tournament.

This online computer tournament is open for both authors and operators. I understand that some authors may not be available to make it due to a different concerns or tight schedule, however there is some testers for chess engines and a lot of engines owners that maybe able to join in behave of the author but with the author permission. I don't see why we can't have some interested to be an operator for some programs. The process to get an account on ICC and to get on ICC with the engine is quite easy in fact you do get free membership on ICC with the account just for that tournament! It is understandable it is time consuming to make sure program is working properly and accept tourney games but it should be fun for some of us that generally test chess programs for free time!

Now, to cut it short. It is still early for the upcoming CCT11, however who wants to have the courage to step up and volunteer to be an operator for any program that he/she wishes to join with, List in your hardware and whether you use windows 32/64 any TBs?? and we could help you get in touch with the author for a permission (I had to search Rahman email to ask for permission for his program Ktulu) That's my suggestion and maybe we can get some operators interested that way. Let's remember it's all for fun competitive tournament, our goal should be able to see as many participate in the tournament and to make use of the 9 rounds advantage this time around, and make record breaking numbers for the amount of participate this yr! Wouldn't it also be fun to see all top programs battling each other and medium average program to get a chance to play stronger opposition? This tournament is an yearly event so why not make it big tournament!

I think in tournaments like CCT as well as others it is vital that the authors permission is obtained to enter. If possible the author should operate and if not a team member. An operator who has no real connection with the engine should be a last resort.

I respect your opinion, However I would rather see the program participate. The original idea if authors can't make it, then operator is the alternative.

I enjoyed talking to you last tournament, and getting to play 8 core Glaurung. I am glad to hear you will participate again, and welcome Glaurung and Ktulu. I of course prefer authors to participate when possible, but reliable operators that test their setup well ahead of time are a reasonable alternative. Unreliable operators are of course undesirable  .

I have followed all CCT for ages, and it seems to me that authors much more often than operators have been unreliable.
We should thank these guys who freely give their time for testing and /or operating other people's work.
They are more than "a reasonable alternative" !

Yes, It's always good to have an author approved operators. I had operated for TwistedLogic, Slowchess and now planning to operate for Bright.

It's fun being in the tournament and talking to others. You just watch and chat and watch the engine play round after round.

If any tester or a member is interested in operating for some engine, please let me know I will inform some authors who might be interested in approving you as an operator.

You get ICC handle free for about a month.

Right. As for spectator would enjoy the competition and challenge in a tournament like CCT. I would rather see a strong program join whether it is Author or an operator than not see it at all. Author should join but if he is not available Operator should come in handy there. Rules are crystal clear that way.

I agree with both Sam & Marc. I got to meet Sam in the tournament and got to learn a bit of his strong program and conversation we had, always able to make friends and able to enjoy the games as we operate!

as Marc point out, Operator do volunteer their time to make this happen as well. Involve a commitment for Operator to be responsible and show up in time. However it is true operator should be able to know how to get the program online and have knowledge with ICC commands otherwise operator might be useless.

I do have an 8-core 2.8Ghz Mac Pro I'd be willing to operate for someone.

Good, I'll let you know of any programmers who would be willing to let you operate their program. And welcome to the club, Ken! I'd assure you that you'd enjoy a good deal at ICC during the CCT's

Thank you for your interest. What programs do you own? 8 core is indeed something authors would like hehe
