Yes... I was unclear. I meant ...Why buy deep fritz 10 when Rybka 3 kicks its stuff all over the place and is cheaper :D. I understand variety of engines etc. However speaking in terms of practicality and bang for dollar.......well.............. I must say I find Uri's comment interesting............... Indeed...If I were in charge of Fritz marketing I would be offering the 'Deep' versions at non deep prices...I think more money would be made then. Only if Fritz ever beats Rybka consistently ( )would I sell 'Deep' at higher prices. Yes?

I would still but Deep Fritz 10 for it's interesting playing style....
Since the release of Fritz 11 it became obvious that it's playing style has gone fishy, meaning it's playing stronger but boring....
The same goes for Deep Fritz 11,Deep Fritz 10 was another story 8-)
I play the damn things,I know the damn things regards,

Fascinating.......... What is to your taste about Deep Fritz 10? Does it play a more tactical game? What? :?

Deep Fritz 10 plays aggressive and I mean aggressive chess, but it's a positional master also,it won't go for mad sacrifices like Deep Junior 7 for example after which it will regret what follows....
I've seen positions in which Deep Fritz 10 will manoeuvre carefully gaining a slow positional advantage just to strike it's opponent out of nowhere and getting him invovlved in a tactical storm the outcome of which is in Deep Fritz's side....

I guess that buying Deep Fritz is like buying ChessMaster. People buy it because they like the whole package.

Let's face it, any decent chess engine can teach us good things about chess unless we are Kasparov or Topolov or someone like that. I guess that if everyone who posts here played 10 games against ChessMaster at G/10 minutes, there would be no wins by the humans. ChessMaster is clearly much weaker than Rybka and yet it sells more than all programs combined, including Rybka.

If you care only about strength and you don't want to spend any money then:
1. Get the free Ryka 2.x
2. Get some free GUIs
have fun.

I have all of the chess systems that there are. I don't use ChessBase very often (in fact, I mainly use it to convert ChessBase format data into PGN or other more useable format). But if Fritz were to make a UCI version I would definitely buy it.

For instance, I like to run very slow time control contests between strong engines in oddball openings like Orangutan or also 1. e3. Then I like to examine the games both statistically and manually. It is not only Rybka that can perform a brilliant move that gives me a lot of enjoyment.

So my suggestion is to do whatever makes you happy. I guess that I am not the only one who likes chess engines besides Rybka. Don't get me wrong -- I think Rybka is utterly fantastic. But I think that other engines are fantastic also.

It depends on what I am doing. I use the following a lot:
Arena (Easy contest administration and Epd analysis, has quirks though)
Chess Assistant (As above, supports more variants, less quirky)

I use the following some:
Scid (very nice for PGN processing)
Aquarium (I am starting to like this one more and more)
ChessGui (This gets better all the time)
Winboard (Best for online over the internet stuff)
ChessMaster (I like some of its features)
Shredder Interface (I like some of its features)

I rarely use:
ChessBase
ChessGenius GUI
ChessPartner (though I like the CP engines and use them a lot)

I just bought Deep Fritz 10 - it is MUCH more aggressive than Fritz 11 and better at tactics by far.

On my Quad Deep Fritz 10 beat Fritz 11 6.5-3.5
