24 Core Machine (4x X7460 2.66GHZ)

Hello there,

The 24 core machine(4x X7460 2.66GHZ) seems to be one of the top fastest hardwares for chess,but anyway i think its too expensive to spend 20.000 usd for a such hardware,normally its true that the speed is approx.2 times faster than QX9650@4000MHz,but the price is not 2 times more

For example,nowdays QX9650@4000MHz or i7 920@4000 MHz can be build only for 1500 usd

(the Kns calculations are done by using the formula x1,636,for example

where do you get those informations about that 24core machine??

I own such a machine, and its chessperformance is really disapointing compared to its numbers of processors. This kind of machine has only one
memorycontroller onboard. This is a huge bottlenegg for chessperformance. My experiences so far are that some engines show big speed + , but sure not rybka3. R3 Search speed average is 350-400KNs which is same as an Intel QX 9775 @ 4GHz.
I also wonder where you get a Fritz bench for 24 cores. DF11 supports max. 16 cores and has 20.000 - 22.000KNs on that machine.
Zappa Mex II makes 12.000KNs average.
Maybe the machine, you get your informations from is different as mine?
Mine has a supermicro board with 32GB RAM.

Somehow that looks slow, but I have not tried that box yet. A dual i7 was almost that fast. Someone posted results from a single i7 for Crafty that was hitting around 17-18M which matched the results I saw when I tested on such a box. And the dual was about 2x faster in my testing. I have not yet run on a quad 6-core box so am not sure why it would be that slow, I would expect speeds beyond 60M and hopefully closer to 80-100M...

Unless it is clocked very slow or something...

I've not even seen and quad chipsets. We are still waiting on delivery of a dual i7 here where the MB is the delay...

Who knows what Rybka's Knps is? He doesn't report factual numbers...

Now that I notice the 74xx model, it is not surprising that performance is a bit off. 6 cores are going to starve for data and instructions. 4 is already getting tight which is why the new I7 looks so good it seems...

It will use as many as you have. Eugene ran it on a 64 processor Itanium several years ago. I have run it on several 16 and 32 processor boxes. As long as you compile it with CPUS=N where N is large enough, it will work. It might take some tweaking with things like the smp parameters to get optimal performance however. smpgroup is one that might go larger with big numbers of CPUs...
