This position showed up in a home game between Prodeo 1.6 and Anmon 5.66. Glaurung 2.2 and Toga 1.4se do not play it but Bright 0.4a shines here.

How much faster? It takes a lot more nodes to overcome the extra overhead of twice the number of processors. Almost certainly more nodes than you're gaining.

A 50% speed up may indeed be enough to make hyperthreading a benefit, but that is far higher than I've ever seen anyone else claim. Are you sure that the 4 thread number is with hyperthreading turned off, rather than using 4 of the 8 threads with hyperthreading turned on? Otherwise, unless you can be sure that each thread is on a separate processor, it won't be a valid comparison.

Hyper threading is turned on in my bios. My understanding is that the operating system detects programs that call for the 8 threads and utilizes them accordingly. I'm not to savy on all the terminology.
My understanding is that I have one processor, a quad core. so therefore 4 cores. And then 8 threads with HT = on in the bios.
Is that correct?

Also when I turned ht off in the bios my device manager shows
only 4 cpu's, when normally it is 8.

Very little (if any) boost for chess, where the CPUs are screaming at full tilt.

Some small boost for other apps that benefit from the cheap context switch when the CPUs aren't pegged.

That's my understanding of what a Core I7 is. I am not certain that it would actually allocate four threads in the best possible way. I suggest you turn HT off in the BIOS and see if the numbers hold up.
