I guess they are both muuuuch too strong for me with Crafty. The only positive experience I had in chess was in 1988, with Chessmaster 2000 and DOS XT at 8 MHz, I was pretty happy every time I beat it as a youngster :). I guess your chess level is higher than mine, but beyond Chessmaster 3000 and 40 MHz you have to be a very strong player (Elo 2100-2300), I think, to beat it on regular basis on say half-an-hour time controls. In blitz it's even harder.

for a complete overview i recommend this site: www.umpcportal.com

IMO it is by far the best site regarding UMPCs, MIDs and netbooks...

Some programs might have options that can help you "weaken" the CPU.
I am talking about AnMon for example, which has a UCI option called "% CPU", min 10 max 100. Using this simple option, you can emulate a CPU ten times slower than the one you have (if you set it to 10).
If you have a netbook, this would be like playing against hardware from the previous century.

Hello Robert, thank you for the tip. I popped the term 500mhz into their search engine and found this one:

http://www.umpcportal.com/products/Data ... CX/CX-7001

It seems to have everything I would need to play WB engines and have a chance of winning. Seems to be Internet friendly too. I did a search on Google for a retailer but nothing came up. Anyone with better searching skills than me know where this laptop or one similar can buy purchase NEW.

Thank you,

Sean

Maybe a minimalist uMax engine, if you will put a Crafty on it I bet it will destroy you, if you are not an IM.

Of course you can compile Crafty 23.0 with -DSKILL option and then set skill=20 (or whatever level gives you a challenging game). This is set in the .craftyrc (or crafty.rc for Windoze users). Skill=5 is easy to beat if you are a 1500 level player. Skill=1 might lose a game to my dog so there is lots of room to experiment.
