Anyone with experience of Shredder Linux?

Post by Marek Soszynski »

Anyone with experience and comments about running Deep Shredder 11 Linux, or Shredder 11 Linux, or Shredder Classic 3 Linux?

Is it easy to install, and so on?

I am an ignorant about Linux, so it is probable that my problems came not form Linux or Shredderm, but from me.

Yes, you have to download a compressed file, uncompress it in a folder you like and then run an executable called ShredderClassic3 (if this does not work, perhaps try "$>java -jar LinShredder.jar" from inside the folder).
You have to have Java installed.
The file you download is available as a demo for 30 days and then you need to buy a licence to unlock it, so you don't really have to ask here, you can try and see for yourself.

I've managed to install Shredder Linux on PCLinuxOS, but not yet on Ubuntu.

I'm surprised how poorly Linux caters for serious chess, but that's another topic.

I think you have that backwards. It is not that Linux doesn't
cater to serious chess; it is that serious chess doesn't cater to Linux.
There are several engines that run on Linux, but more that don't.
The reason is only that the authors don't try.

The reason for the Linux Chess GUI's lagging behind MS, is simply
market share.

A distinction without a difference, for Linux users.

I am surprised you could not run it on Ubuntu. As I wrote, Java (1.5 or newer) is the only dependency. Besides, since it is a java program, you can run the GUI on any OS that supports java (including Windows, Mac OS, Solaris, etc.). The operating system's only role is to provide Java.

There is no need to bash Linux about "catering poorly for chess". I mean, it is obviously your fault.

I realise that I am only a guest in the house of Linux, so I ought to stop moaning and sit quickly; just don't be surprised if I suddenly depart through one of the windows.
