System security is only tangentially related to computer chess (though one could argue that preserving the state of the computer is necessary for computer chess).

None of the products you mention are free. If you actually want to do useful things with them over the long haul, you will have to pay.

Look here:
http://sourceforge.net/search/index.php ... &limit=100

This thing, in particular, has 19 million downloads:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/clamwin/

We have had complaints on this thread but I do not see a clear violation of the charter. If Robert or Steve does see a clear violation the thread may disappear.

Well, I was reading the thread on Fafis 2.0.
Commercial, ie not free, tools were cited there.

I wanted to go further with other security tools
which can be useful for us, mortal testers.

But I feel I should stop here.

Why download something that is "infected"?
Besides lots of "infections"are not solved with the double click of the mouse.
In a lot of cases one has no other choice but to flatten(format and reinstall).
Its better to use common sense before downloading.

I see this topic as being in the same category as OS discussions and discussions of hardware specs. To run chess programs at optimal speed you do need to keep junk off your computer.

Back on topic, ClamAV is very good, but it isn't an automated protection system, so it will fail for many people. You must manually scan they stuff you download and set up scheduled scans. If it finds something and you are already infested, you frequently have to download a separate removal tool.

I have had friends accidentally send me virus files. I have never been infected by them, but it could easily happen if I did not use virus protection properly.

With a removal tool you are one step behind/too late.
