i shouldve been more clear, as from what i can tell, many engines prefer Ne7 which is not as decisive. naum is the only engine i've tried that really understands this position more or less immediately. +3.90 for Ne5, +1.06 for Ne7.

Well, Ancalagon does clearly prefer to play Ne7, so it is not so clearcut for me that Ne5 would be the best, even though Magnus Carlsen played this or Crafty finds it in milliseconds
. Maybe tablebases play a role?

I think that Naum maybe saw a tablebase win? I have not tested it though. For Glaurung and derivatives it probably makes little distinction which move is chosen because they do not use tablebases or bitbases. For instance, with a small change in the handling of threatmoves in the next build, the search seemed to get more pessimistic and Ancalagon switched from Ne7 to Ne5 with a comparably high eval as for Ne7:Will Singleton wrote:Looks like Naum might be in error here. Build 171 has again a small change in whether to return a fail low score after a failed null move or instead to try to extend, or not reduce, the present node, the change was not related to the testposition at all but again picking Ne7. I liked in this build that the score seemed to go up a bit faster, it is not very specific about threatmoves but because I have not yet figured out how to return several cases from the boolean function ok_to_prune(), to make it more specific, being lazy I did not make a new ok_to_prune function yet so this is now the default version:
