Fruit 2.3.1

Post by Stephen Ham »

Dear friends,

I purchased Fruit 2.3.1 in late 2007 in 1-cpu format. But I today read that CCRL claims Fruit 2.3.1 is also available in mp format. If true, then how do I acquire that version for my mp computer?

I like Fruit stylistically and for endgames. But Wikipedia claims that Fruit variants, such as Grapefruit and Toga have "more knowledge" and a superior search.

Although I agree that Toga outsearches Fruit, I'm more interested in endgame knowledge. My my experience has been that Fruit is at least Toga's equal in endgames, but I've performed too little testing with Grapefruit. Comments?

Of these three, Fruit 2.3.1, Toga variants, and Grapefruit, which has the most endgame knowledge? Is it available in mp format?

Thanks in advance.

All the best,
Steve

You *purchased* Fruit 2.3.1??? AFAIK 2.3.1 was never commercial and always free.

Hi Stephen,
You can also go to Toga site and get Toga engines based on Fruit.
Most of the new Toga engines are MP.They are also faster and stronger so you can enjoy that aspect of the engines.

Members also get additional engines that are in the testing stages.

Hi Ray,

I did a Google search under Fruit 2.3.1. One of the hits was from computerchess.org/uk. Referencing Fruit 2.3.1 at CCRL 40/4 is this quote, "Fruit 2.3.1 (egbb tbc) played with current participants of this list, Represented by. 1-2-CPU,..."

I wondered about that too.

All the best,
Steve

Click on the link and you see no such statement - crap misleading search result by Google.

All it means is that Fruit 2.3.1 single CPU is included on a list which contains both 1 and 2 CPU engines.

Stephen, the only MP versions of Fruit are private and it does not seem likely that Ryan Benitez will release a new version of Fruit. Your only chance would be becoming a betatester for Ryan I think...

Fruit vs. Toga; in the endgame Fruit 2.2.1 and higher, the ones that were commercial for a while, can use real Nalimov endgame tablebases so that can be an advantage sometimes. Nalimov is private code from Eugene Nalimov which means it is not really compatible with GPL releases, so for Toga the only option is bitbases at the moment and in my opinion the implementation of using Scorpio bitbases is not always to be relied upon for best analysis and I imagine that you, as a chessplayer, Steve do not really want to study the exceptions, where the bitbases do not work yet. Not when there are so many better options for instance under so many commercial programs using either Nalimov or their own version of bitbases.

I can well imagine you would prefer to use Fruit than Toga for playing engames in correspondence chess if you already have Nalimov endgame tablebases installed for programs that can use them. It is not that you get wrong results using bitbases in Toga but when the position contains a mate, Toga will just give a big score but often only without bitbases actually find a mate sequence. I don't think there are Toga versions with much new chess endgame knowledge at the moment. Exception maybe being a version that actually knows how to win with Knight and Bishop against Lone King :)

Eelco
