Dear Computer Chess Environmentalists,
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docu ... ct=3966262
The $298.00 USD price is not too bad for a computer that will beat all the stand alone machines out there. While it doesn't compare with the Quad Intel Processors on I-7 boards and 12 GB of +1600 MHz RAM, it only uses less than 65 watts for all functions.
If you go to a tropical island and only have a 100 watt solar panel and a power inverter then you will be most grateful.

Sincerely,
Uncle Timbo
PS BTW....I bought one today. There were ten nerds ahead of me. Fortunately, Walmart had sixty units for sale. I told my wife that she could use it for her writing.

An Intel based laptop would be even better for chess speed and even lower power consumption. But considerably more expensive

At first I thought you were referring to the original "Great Game Machine".

Re: Great Game Machine to Play Your Favorite Chess Program
Steve,
I bought a Great Game Machine from the Schwartz in the early 1980s. After adding a few modules such as the "Steinitz" and "Capablanca" cartridges,I ended up paying twice as much
as I did for this 2009 release low energy use computer.
My first real computer with 4 MB of RAM plus a Nanao 16 inch monitor cost me over $4000.00 USD in 1986. It ran DOS 4.1 and drove me insane. It also drove my mechanical engineer buddy nuts.
Today, the portable computers offer the owner DVD movie play, good sound, the ability to copy DVD/CD disks, 56 k modem, ethernet, and Wi-Fi. In addition, the 3 GB RAM allows one to have 2 GB free for apps.
I use my CQ60 419 WM cheapo for running planetarium programs such as Celestia and Stellarium. It has the power to run at 45 frames per second and is more than adequate. I can also run Megastar 5 and the Sky by Software Bisque in addition to the Deepsky database program.
Today's GGMs are truly neat devices that can be used for work, play and survival.
Timbo
PS A quad processor in a portable format is an energy hog and while it sounds "whiz-bang" it is totally unneeded. When we get that kind of power to run on 25 Watts as does my unit then I will purchase one. Then we will be will be buying 16 to 64 processor monsters for our desktop. Will that make us happier?

Ray,
The AMD processor in the CQ60 419 wm uses only 25 watts maximum. I doubt that Intel chips are any better.
I get a Shredder Mark of 1397 with this machine. While that is comparatively slow to most of the AMD/Intel Quad processors it is sufficient for a good game of chess.
AMD and Intel make good stuff. I live down the street from the Intel plant. Actually, Intel is across the River in Rio Rancho,NM.
