Those could be some pretty costly reparations...Peter
I will give some hints:
1. The site/server is hosted in the Netherlands.
2. It is another "forum" based distribution site.
3. The owner of the site lives in New York City.
4. It currently receives more than $36,000/month in "donations" from it's members. Actual server costs (100% confirmed costs) are less than $600/month.
5. It is a four letter domain name. ie. abcd.com (Obviously just the domain is valuable based on the characters).
The only reason I state that it is possible to close it this week is due to the server location. In the recent EU elections (and even after them) the Pirate Party has gained some significant support, and providers are less scared of legal issues due to the new found support.
What was once a simple email and a single phone call to do, now takes slightly longer and involves more people. (SIIA, BSA). A previously proven however, nothing is "untouchable" as previously thought.
The best thing about it is, these sites actually shoot themselves in the foot by taking more donations than are actually needed to run the website. This produces a profit margin, and profiting from piracy is where the law can really take action.
In real conversations with Anti-Piracy agencies, law makers (In Canada and the US), and some ISP's in the EU, most could give a rat's butt about Joe Blow file sharer because they are not doing it for profit. This is why torrenting is so widely used, and for the most part, accepted.
As one person told me:
"You could stand out on the street all day long and give out Windows Vista to everyone that passes, and as long as you aren't charging for the merchandise, there will likely be no one that interferes. Even Microsoft wouldn't care because they would simply blacklist the license, and your "version" is taken care of for 99.6% of the people that take it, and don't know anything about activation work arounds. However, if you charged $0.01, even to make up the costs involved, you will have some serious issues to deal with."
