a return to the early chess computers sold 30+ years ago
no playing surface..only a key board..low playing strength

The AT Mega MCU family is very popular with hardware experimenters. See: http://blog.makezine.com/archive/arduino/

But for chess I'd use the similarly priced Hitachi/Renasys H8 (seen in Novag products); it's like having a DEC pdp-11 on a chip.

Damn and blast!!
This chess computer without the casing will be in the August (UK) edition of Elektor electronics magazine to build.
I was going to build one and stick a Novag sticker on it and sell it to SteveB for $1000 as a never released Novag prototype.
There is also another chess computer project in the October edition to look forward to.

Even though I consider SteveB a good friend of mine,I have to admit that this is a brilliant idea :mrgreen:
I can handle the printing of a false manual and by that we can have another promising customer to milk....Fernando 8-)
