Hi !

Most of the new commercial chess engines has SP & MP versions (Rybka/Shredder/Hiarcs..........).Why not Fritz 12 ?
1.They are a lot of chess fans not interested in MP versions ! A good algorithm can make a SP chess engine much stonger like a MP version of any engine ( Rybka  ).
2.A SP version is cheap !
3.SP & MP versions have different commercial targets.

So....why to pay twice for the same GUI ????
Only patience ! A bit !
Of course if the crisis disappeared you can buy twice every new chess engine. Will be a good support for ChessBase and the authors !

Silvian

I think the lack of competition is much more important. Convekta is starting to innovate a bit with Aquarium, but we're still very far from a wide market where all competitors are trying to win market share with new features.

Silvian,

I understand what you are saying but the point I was trying to make is that if someone is an MP engine user and wants to get the Fritz 12 GUI now (and not wait months) then they have to buy it with the SP engine. When the MP engine becomes available Chessbase do not offer the option to those people who have already bought the GUI, to buy just the MP engine ie. there is no upgrade path. Those users will have to buy the whole package again which means they will be buying a second copy of the GUI simply to get the MP engine files.
chess interfaces are still basically stuck in 1996. this is what happens when u have programs made by nerds for nerds, i guess. but they could be made MUCH simpler while still retaining all their features & then some. (that said i havent tried the shredder GUI yet tho am eager to pick it up when the new one comes out).
Chess strength and a decent interface that is low on system requirements has always been my choice. I have always preferred Shredder's interface to Chessbase's.

I prefer Shredder as well, although that has not always been the case. Coming from Chessbase, the menu structure was quite different and confusing, and took a while to get used to. Once I got used to it, I found it superb. I haven't used a chessbase GUI in avery long time, except to go on playchess and follow matches
