There are three ways to take such a statement.lonola wrote:The Fritz GUI doesn't crash in my experience.
1. Congratulations, you are in a minority of ONE.
2. You are a liar.
3. Your experience is zero and you are partizan.
I leave others to decide on which it is. I bet you can guess which I think.
The thread is about the GUI that ships with the Fritz engine. The Arena GUI is......
Do try to stay on topic, there's a good chap......

Yes I agree. Not everything got fixed sometimes although. There were a few old chestnuts that ran and ran through various service packs and versions.Mike S. wrote:This is difficult to answer, as most Windows versions were supported with several bugfixes, each. E.g. if the initial version would sometimes crash under certain conditions, I assume that some of crashes were fixed, later.
That has not happened to me. I can see how the problem could be explained by the reason you give.My version of F11 which was distributed with S11 SE, sometimes crashes when I try to load an UCI engine. It could be related to tablebase access during initialisation, but I'm not sure.
Yes I agree again. The DOS Fritzes were in my experience the least problematic (if at all). The DOS Fritzes were very stable, like most commercial DOS chess programs I have used. But these progs often required "advanced configuration skills" to optimize the memory configurations, both of system and the program itself. Maybe they have crashed more often, if being installed on an average book-keeping computer without care for config.sys or any parameters...
Which leads us maybe to suppose that it is the fact that it was not properly ported to windows in the right way.

Make it a minority of two. Perhaps I've just been lucky, but I've not experienced problems with the Fritz GUIs crashing either.Christopher Conkie wrote:There are three ways to take such a statement.lonola wrote:The Fritz GUI doesn't crash in my experience.

Which version did you buy and when? The reason why I ask is because there have been service packs for every Windows 95 version onwards until now. You could say that 4 never had a service pack but even that did have a later version. Including that version, it is possible to recreate a crash by doing something that is not unreasonable unless since 7, you do not play on the Playchess Server that is.Graham Banks wrote: Make it a minority of two. It depends what you want to use it for. For me its analysis with positions and testing. I'm just guessing that for you it is primarily to play a computer chess tournament. I think a computer chess GUI should do both.
So which ones and when to sum up? I know you used at least as far back as Fritz 8.
When the next poll. the "Which Fritz GUI is the most crash free in your experience? comes up, I would hope you would also not vote, since nothing crashes (but it depends if you have tried them all) in your experience.

I've owned all versions of Fritz except the first one. I've used the GUIs mainly for engine v engine testing, but also occasionally for game analysis and position analysis.Christopher Conkie wrote:Which version did you buy and when? I mean did you buy every Fritz GUI before the first service pack for that GUI came out? I did, did you? That might explain it.Graham Banks wrote:Not sure what you mean exactly?Christopher Conkie wrote:Not so fast.....when?Graham Banks wrote:I've owned all versions of Fritz except the first one. Not with the earlier versions no. That could certainly explain some of the problems I guess.Christopher Conkie wrote:I mean did you buy every Fritz GUI before the first service pack for that GUI came out? I did, did you?
