I think in that feature not much people are interested in (in contrast to me). It has nothing to do with the operating system of the computer. I made some tests with older versions of Shredder in the past. It was better than in other programs, but a) to rough and b) for me not weak enough.

The real playing strength is only approximately related to the value in "UCI_Elo". A very good choice in this regard is Crafty IMO. I use it if I play myself. I tested Shredder, Rybka, Phalanx/Toga in Scid, Arasan, ProDeo, Yace, BeoWulf... Crafty won this competition by a clear margin.

But can Wine handle 64-bit engines?

Yes and no. For any 64 bit version of Rybka, you can run it in linux with microwine. Details about how to do so (and install microwine) are at http://rybkachess.com/index.php?auswahl=Installation

Most other windows 64 bit engines, do not yield a significant performance gain. There is a wine 64 project which is not yet fully mature but might support some engines.

It is also possible to modify microwine to work with other engines though this requires modifying code.
