Why do I only see core duos in stores?

Post by S.Taylor »

I've recently been in stores (including airport stores [during travel] but also a few others), and the "better" laptop computers for sale, are merely core duo's, but not quads or faster. The very cheap ones are single, but when I look around for atleast a quad, off the shelf, I havn't even seen any. Even the most expensive ones, are only duo's.

Is it that there is not so much demand outside of chess?

Laptops are more geared towards low power consumption and quadcores suck up a lot of watts. I think pretty soon with the new die shrinks the CPU wattage will be quite low for quads and they will be incorporated in travel laptops as well. It is just a matter of time. If you look hard enough you can find quadcore laptops today, but I wouldn't expect more than 45 minutes of battery time if all 4 cores are analyzing chess.

No, the demand is for battery life. That's the primary issue. There are laptops with quads, but battery life is minimal.

Not to mention they cease to become laptops. My core-2 duo laptop gets beyond hot when using both cores running crafty. So hot I can not let it sit on my lap.

Yes, I don't believe there is much demand for quad core laptops. Microcenter store do carry this one but I do believe it is a bit pricey.

Walmart just got new shipment of computers in store here today. No quads in the laptop.
Most coming in now has Windows 7.
Hp has got some nice desktop for $500.-$900.

Best.

Thanks all, for explaining me this.
My only present comuter for past 5 years has been an hp laptop.

So the best new laptop i could get at a low/medium bodget price, is only about twice the speed of this, i.e. a duo. Hardly a nice prize for having waited 5 years! (so a desk top might be next. I don't use my laptop for travelling purposses anyway)

I have a Core2Duo Dell Laptop, it doesn't get all that when running mp engines for quite a while.

If you do get a desktop better check out Windows 7 before
buying it. Getting a lot of question on how not so good
7 is. Like the movie making and photos managing is not
very good.

Best.

Gerold.

P.S.I use Picasa 3 most the time for photos anyway.
Or hp software. Window 7 seems to be a stripped
down version of xp.

There are two series of the Core 2 Duo laptop chips, the Txxx series and the Pxxx series. The Pxxx series are extra low voltage and won't burn your lap so fast.

Please note the videocard and HD can also make quite a bit of heat.
