Mate in 4...

Post by Michael Diosi »

Hi,

this seems to be one of those in the meantime quite numerous "one in a million positions" where some of the engines have difficulties to solve a simple mate.

This is part of an analisys of a chess study by A.A.Troitzky, Novoje Wremjy 1897.

[d]8/8/2B3N1/5p2/6p1/6pk/4K2b/7r w - - 0 3

So which engine can solve it and which can't ?

Most of the engines I tried got it.

Fritz 8 had the right line but still could not see the mate. CometB68 claimed mate #57 with the right line seen except for the final check. And even more peculiar it could not see the winning line from this position!

[d]8/8/8/5p2/5Np1/6p1/4K1kb/7r b - - 0 2

For some strange reason it thinks Ke3 is the best move!!!

Hi,
looks like some rybkas can't.
Wy don't you try stockfish?
Stockfish is an engine disigned to play chess.
It is strong.
It can underpromote.
It doesn't has the insufficent material bug.
It can deal with null move positions in a reasonable way, ok sometimes you must wait.
:(

kind regards

Hi,

according to my info Fritz 11 doesn't find it. Fritz 1 didn't find it (according to a German computer chess magazine). I wonder if Fritz 12 finds it.

ChessMind finds it after 2.5 seconds on depth 15 because I am using double nullmove in the endgame, so dealing with zugzwang positions takes a bit longer.
If I disable null moves, the mate is seen after 0.1 seconds.

GnuChess sees it instantly (less than 0.01 seconds).

Hi!

yes:
R3, Fritz 5.32, 10, for 11 only by nullmove off, otherwise no

no:
Naum4, Robbolite
Once again I see Robbo more like Naum then like Rybka.

Even my Smirf MS-175r does it:
00:00.0 (06.03=) +M~004 3.Bg2+ (Nf4+) Kxg2 4.Nf4+ Kg1 5.Ke1 g2 6.Ne2#
00:00.0 (05.01=) -1.059 3.Nf4+ (=/=) Kh4 4.Bxh1 Bg1 5.Kd1 Bd4 6.Ke2
