Providing clone chess engines within the GPL is fine.

Then why is he banned by this forum and WBEC ? Someone doesn't think it is okay!

Obviously Norman isn't doing everything up to snuff! The guy is banned!!!

So, what is your point? When you say, " Providing clone chess engines within the GPL is fine."

If you condone his practices, then come out and just say so. Don't beat around the bush!

As long as it's from open source that's legitimate, of course.
For example, I test Norman's Cyclone because it's a legal GPL derivative of Toga.

A well known provider of clone chess engines.

So! That didn't take much effort did it? And a step in the right direction in understanding who these people might be that you are dealing with.

You are all very intelligent people-don't be myopic in your academic understanding of this issue. It is much broader than just limiting the research to the compilation of a chess engine.
Maybe Norman has already repented and is now "clean".
At least his site does not host pirated engines.
As Alex said, it is better that people go get Robbo at Norman's website than at a googled warez site with lots of pirated engines.
Take your pick.

Matthias.
My engine was quite strong till I added knowledge to it.

My God! What did he do to get himself banned from WBEC and the forum?

Nothing? Just compile an lot of innocent chess engines from within the GPL?

Jesus! Wept! What are you guys smoking-it must be good shit!

I once met a Professor in a parking lot- he looked lost. He held in his hand's books and papers. Pulling his car keys out of his mouth he told me he'd found his car but couldn't for the life of him find his keys.

Right!

So, there is no more discussion with you on this. I'm not going to debate with you this gentleman's penchant for cloning, and if you chose to associate yourself with him that is on you. Good luck!

He is banned because he claimed the Clone engines are his own work. He did it 2 times. He got caught. Profes where provided and he where punished for that.

It is sad that you prefer any "googled warez site with lots of pirated engines".

Yes, and according to WBEC he cannot be trusted because he has recalcitrant behaviors when it comes to chess engine cloning.

Now, could it just be that he was approach and has affiliated himself with a group that is involved in an historic cloning enterprise- just hypothetically! (Please don't anyone get their panties in bunch over this question).

And considering this guy's hatred toward you all, it would make sense that he'd go right along with them, wouldn't it.

Going to bed with this guy- I'd say you'd have some real strange affinities for bedfellows.
