Hey, my first ever reply to this forum. Depends on what one wants from this computer chess pastime. As a player and observer of chess games, both computer and human, I view it as a sport or a fight. Close competitions are always interesting for me in sports.
This means enjoying college football as much as professional.

So the chess engines I observe most are those in the 2700-2800 range. Crafty is one that is constantly changed and offered to us.
Hopefully the programmers of such engines as Alaric, Cyrano, Movei and Collosus, to name a few, will come out of "retirement" because there is a segment of us who enjoy these also.

Of course I use the top engines too for analysis.
