Testposition

Post by Eelco de Groot »

With 38... Kh8{?} I think Black is losing the draw instantly, but I could not see any big score running Stockfish or Rybka on the position. Is there any engine that sees it or did Black miss something? In the game the eval quickly went down. The threat against the outposted Knight on e6 by Rd6! threatening d5! is crushing

[d]7k/pb3p2/1p2n2p/3R2pN/P2P2P1/1P3P2/2r4P/4B1K1 w - -

How long for a plusscore on this position?

But this was the first testgame where Stockfish 1.6.3s was playing fairly well and could have drawn! Also a big thanks to the Rybka team for making Rybka 2.3.2a 32-bit single procesor available!

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

On leaving spark 0.3 running a bit longer the score is gradually dropping

I am not convinced that it is a winning move - a number of engines initially have a small + score and then it appears to drop.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your results with Spark and Louis too, what about Crafty :) ?! Maybe Black can escape by a hair, like the biblical camel through a needle's eye. But it is very difficult. I do not know the answer but such a position is pretty rare I think. I know of King Safety issues that are deceiving when the attack turns out to fail but not like this!

Eelco

Hi Marco,

Sorry, it is not official of course, I hope you are not planning a 1.6.3 version yet that would be an official update, it would be confusing :P

What do you think about Volker's reported strange, out of bounds, eval results though, could there be a bug in the regular sources or is it just a missing math library? See the other thread, where Dann introduced 1.6.2s. and I mentioned the 1.6.3s Schumacher Formula 1 version.

I am experimenting a little with King Safety again playing testgames with Black only, against my brand new Rybka 2.3.2a and this was the first one where Stockfish could have drawn. If it had not run into this complicated attack on the outpost Knight! Strong play by Rybka 2.3.2a at the end of the middle game again, it was impressive, I had hoped Stockfish would draw.

I am now changing the values of Outpost Knights on the board. I don't really understand that move Kh8? though. 38... Kg8 is surely much better but I have not yet found a way to let Stockfish play it. This is my new variation of the Knight Outpost bonus array:

Code: Select all

// Outpost bonuses for knights and bishops, indexed by square (from white's
// point of view).
const Value KnightOutpostBonus[64] = {
    //  A     B     C     D     E     F     G     H
    V(0), V(0), V(0), V(0), V(0), V(0), V(0), V(0), // 1
    V(0), V(0), V(0), V(0), V(0), V(0), V(0), V(0), // 2
    V(0), V(0), V(8), V(8), V(8), V(8), V(0), V(0), // 3
    V(0), V(4),V(26),V(28),V(28),V(30), V(4), V(0), // 4
    V(0), V(4),V(18),V(20),V(20),V(18), V(4), V(0), // 5
    V(0), V(4),V(18),V(26),V(26),V(18), V(4), V(0), // 6
    V(0), V(0), V(0), V(0), V(0), V(0), V(0), V(0), // 7
    V(0), V(0), V(0), V(0), V(0), V(0), V(0), V(0)  // 8
My assumption is that e4 and d4 are not such good squares to be on for the Knight and you would rather have a pawn on the fourth supporting a Knight on the fifth. But so far I am not seeing enough difference, not enough to help with the position.

Regards,
Eelco
