Stockfish does remarkably well on WAC.230

Post by Dann Corbit »

It even includes a transposition of Alex Szabo's refutation in the solution path.

Post by BBauer »

So you still use these WAC positions? :)
Up to now we do not know a winning continuation for WAC.230.
So what does it mean "something is good at WAC.230" ?
Stockfish with my settings finds Rb4 after 91 sec and changes to a4 after
834 sec.

Re: Stockfish does remarkably well on WAC.230

Post by Dann Corbit »

All moves except Rb4 are dead drawn (or lost for the stupid moves).
Rb4 has winning chances, but there is an even deeper refutation that means Rb4 is probably also a draw.

But a program that chooses a move besides Rb4 is not analyzing the position correctly (unless it sees all the way through the very deep refutation to a draw -- I never saw any program that could do that).

Hi Dann,

Not all moves except Rb4 are dead drawn (or lost for the stupid moves).
For example stockfish gives the following line
36 +319 752286 27011781128 Kb5 Rb1 Kc6 Rb2 Rb4 cxb4 a4 b5+ Kxb5 Ba3 c3 Re2
Here Rb4 is played after Kb5 Rb1 Kc6 Rb2.
So the phrase
"a program that chooses a move besides Rb4 is not analyzing the position correctly"
looks wrong to me.
Clearly stockfish is strong, so strong that it discards Rb4.
kind regards
Bernhard

Bernhard

Kb5 is a total waste of time and a dead draw.

Get this binary:
http://cap.connx.com/chess-engines/new- ... dd.exe.bz2

And analyze the position. It has Jeremiah Pennery's draw detection code in it. In other words, it is specially designed to clearly understand positions like this. Then, run it against WAC.230 and examine the output. You will see that there is a wall that can be constructed against any move except Rb4.

P.S.
If you need to analyze a position with long, locked pawn chains, then this is the best binary on earth to do that (better than Rybka, Naum, etc.)
