I think you can exclude Arena from the list. It is nothing but a buggy Gui which cause engines to lose on time..... Once the author fixes that, he might be on that list...
I disagree. Arena is the best free chess GUI available. Even some commercial GUIs can't compete.
I found Arena difficult to work with for analyzing games but I think it is mostly meant for Engine Matches and Tournaments. Am I correct about that?

Yes, It's mostly meant for engine matches, tournaments, and test suites testing IMO.

For analysis, I use Chessbase.

In my opinion, the authors of IPPLITE are also true heroes. Many people said that IPPLITE was a clone of Rybka, I'm afraid they were wrong. There are many differences between IPPLITE and Rybka. For example, IPPLITE searches much faster and deeper than Rybka 3. I think CCRL and CEGT should accept the new original engine.
Forget it. CCRL will not test engines with anonymous authors for a start. I think you'll find that CEGT has the same policy (perhaps Werner will confirm).
Add in the stance of other major tournament organisers already stated or otherwise, and you'll find that there is no place for this abomination called Ippo/Robbo in our community except for those who want the strongest engine at any cost (moral, ethical or otherwise).
True heroes have real names.

When 'chess gui" is listed as an interface --are you referring to Tarrasch Gui? As for myself I find Arena very buggy. I am running 64 bit xp which perhaps affects the performance of Arena?

I'm using Mathhias Gemuh's ChessGUI. It will allow the use of both uci plus winboard engines.
The latest versions are available from here:

You can even run it off a flash drive if you wish.

Cheers,
Graham.

It's a shame they don't crash off the highway altogether and disappear!

No other software comes near Arena GUI in terms of eng-eng matches but that's all it can realy offer unfortunately....It's understandable as it's a one man project....
ChessBase is superior in everyway you might think....
