Minimal Xboard

Post by jshriver »

What are the minimal required commands needed by an engine to work with xboard, and what would you consider somewhat crucial but not absolutely needed.

I asked this a long time ago and had some nice answers, but I can't find that post anywhere.

new, level, force, go, time, result, exit.
I think you can play games and tournaments only with these. result and exit are not absolutely needed.
You have to send "feature colors = 0"

The command is named "quit", not "exit".

You can even play without supporting "time" provided you have a somewhat conservative time management to avoid most time losses. Also "level" is only needed to match tournament requirements but is not 100% essential for the engine to work at all with the WB protocol.

It is of course essential to understand opponent moves ...

If the goal is development of a new engine, "setboard" and the inofficial commands "perft" and "divide" would be the very next, really crucial commands to be implemented for testing support IMO.

Basically you only need to understand new, go, force, and long-algebraic chess moves. You have to hardwire the engine for one TC then, though, and keep track of the time it uses yourself (with a safety margin).

So level would be a good next, to be able to specify the TC through the GUI.

The quit command is not really needed; The GUI will kill the engine if it does not react to quit.

It is like perft, but gives you how many "nodes" each move contributes. So, if you have a problem, you know exactly which move is the culprit. You can play that move, execute it again, and know the following culprit. You will quickly trace where the problem is. You need an engine to compare.

This is gaviota's "perftdiv" from the original position:

Code: Select all

perftdiv 1
   -->    f2-f4           1
   -->    c2-c4           1
   -->    e2-e4           1
   -->    d2-d4           1
   -->    h2-h4           1
   -->    g2-g4           1
   -->    f2-f3           1
   -->    c2-c3           1
   -->    b2-b4           1

Prints "perft" for each legal move in the current position, instead of just the total sum. Very helpful for debugging as soon as "perft" returns a wrong number for you, and you want to find the offending branch. You need a trusted reference engine that implements "divide" and prints the correct numbers for you.

perft is something I've been working on recently. Is there a test suite out there for comparing numbers. When tinkering with my move generator I've relied on manually (with my wood board, running moves out and counting) then comparing to what my program says. Has to be a better way :)

Here is one I found a few years ago. I don't remember who it is from. The D1-D6 give the number of nodes for ply 1-6.
