Gaviota Time Management Problem

Post by mhalstern »

Miguel,

I though you might want to see this game:

In this Game gaviota is completely winning but only has around 30 seconds left for the game. Gaviota throws away the win with 82 Ne2 and goes on to lose. The engine did not get to search deep enough, due to the the time siutuation.

Was this under Arena? Gaviota had Tablebases?

Arena has some issues stealing time from engines and apparently when Gaviota is accessing TBs those issues could be worse. Gabor and Adam reported this to me and to do something about it is already in my todo list with high priority.

Gaviota has an agressive time management (thinks a bit more than the average engine) trusting that at the end the TM will be accurate. It works well under linux and xboard, but I may need to change this (maybe a switch so the user can change it). Here I play thousands of games at ultrafast speed with no problem at all. But, my computer is not the World.

Do you have the log file?

Miguel,

I was running under the Fritz12 Gui, using the wb2uci adapter.

wb2uci.eng:

[ENGINE]
Name=gaviota64.exe
Author=Miguel A. Ballicora
Filename=Wb2Uci.exe

[OPTIONS]
Program=gaviota64.exe
Ponder=false

I use the Gaviota tablebases, verified to be working.

In the file, gaviota.ini.txt, I have this entry:

log = on
max_logs = 20

However, I do not see any log files dated today in the engine directory. I have log001.txt, log002.txt and lastlog.txt in the directory, but they are from 01/21 with very little information in them. Are the log files somewhere else, or am I doing something wrong

If I understand the pgn output correctly, gaviota thinks Ne2 is the bast move on ply 7. Testing now, it likes the correct Kd1 on ply8. It only takes 2 seconds to get to the correct conclusion, however in the game, it made the blunder instantly.

if you have in the gaviota.ini.txt this or something similar
log_path = "logs"
Then the logs maybe in that subfolder logs.

I did not have an entry for log_path in the gaviota.ini.txt file. I took the file that was included with the distribution. The entry was not there. I added the subflder "logs" and the entry log_path = "logs" in the file. Now, I see that logs are outputted to the "logs" directory. If I can get Fritz to have both engines play a game, each being out of book from the same position, and if Gaviota nakes the same blunder, I'll post the logs. I'll be glad to post the logs and games shouls similar issues happen in the future.

Because I made too many micro updates with the 0.74.x version (trying to polish the TB release), I must have messed up that option in the ini file. It is ok Marc, if you ever see anything similar, the log may be helpful. Your system is particularly informative because each GUI and adapter has their own "spirit". In other words, different problems may be exposed. Thanks again!
