next tournament without books

Post by Togga »

the next important chess engine tournament will be without openings books. ok? or 1-2-3 half move book?

we can start a poll what the people want to have.

I have run tournaments in the past where the participants don't use opening books. They become boring quite quickly. Just my take.
A book limit of 8 moves per side works quite well.
However, it's good to have a variety of tournaments. You're not going to please everybody anyway.

Cheers,
Graham.

Was the Hiarcs-Sjeng a 50 move book line, and which one was out of book first?

I guess those who write the programs wouldn't really care about such a poll.

Playing the wild2 variant (usual set of pieces, shuffled, no castling) can avoid this. However, I tested it at different time controls and the outcome was almost the same as with books.

test tourney without books

yes, you are right the games could get boring because the games could repeat in each tourney, so 8 moves book is better.

here a sample:
