That is precisely the point. It was to show that one could indeed fit that description and still be a genius.Terry McCracken wrote:Be fair...he had a very high IQ but was an uneducated, paranoid, neurotic with possible schizoid delusions. On a humorous note, a grandmaster often makes a living on chess. What could be more stupid?frcha wrote:Show me one Grand Master who is stupid. - And I dont mean who did something stupid -- since intelligent people can do stupid things - I mean really STUPID.
In this politically correct age , it is common for people to make inane statements like everyone is equal genetically etc.
On a somewhat more serious note, a GM mentioned to me that the smart people from his childhood chose great professions, the inflexible (and thus dumb in his view

Chess playing strenght strongly correlates with IQ. In my opinion it is an exact mesurement of IQ. It has nothing to do with cleverness which is based on knowledge.

Actually intelligent people who play weak chess have one thing in common -- they are not to interested in chess to play and study it too often.
Sure - intelligence is multidimensional -- but the way certain people talk about it -- its as if everyone is somehow equally intelligent -- and that was my point earlier -- its not true -- some are more intelligent than others and there are ways of measuring it even if they cannot be extremely accurate at times.
When discussing this one must ask: What do you define as intelligence?
And no, being "street smart" or being able to play football or basketball well does not qualify as intelligence as most people see it even if those activities do require a small amount of intelligence.
If the IQ test does not measure all aspects of intelligence then name these aspects and we can devise tests for them as well.
If someone memorizes one opening line and can play only that -- is that person a good chess player of course not. But being a good chess player involves a lot more than just memorization and that i think is why chess is directly related to IQ AMONG those who have put about the same time into chess.
Fischer Random is even better in that sense ..

I would have loved to be a GM, traveling a lot, meeting people around the world and competing in many tournaments. I think it is a nice way of living. I am not sure how much an average GM earns, but the champions (and challengers) are doing fine I suppose.shiv wrote:On a humorous note, a grandmaster often makes a living on chess. I also disagree with it.Laszlo Gaspar wrote:Chess playing strenght strongly correlates with IQ. In my opinion it is an exact mesurement of IQ. It has nothing to do with cleverness which is based on knowledge.
I believe that chess is based on knowledge and I consider intelligence as the ability to learn new knowledge.
Strong chess players are strong because of their knowledge and the proof is the fact that you are not going to find a single GM without many hours of experience in chess.
How to think or how to think fast in chess is clearly knowledge.
It is possible that people have different abilities to learn different type of knowledge and there are people who have relatively better talent to learn foreign languages and not chess but my opinion is that people with exceptional talent to learn something(chess or new languages or something else) have to be very intelligent and
I believe that all the chess players with rating above 2700 are clearly above average in their ability to learn mathemtics or in their ability to learn new langauges.
They may not be better than 99.999% of the people but I expect them to be better than more than 95% of the people(and maybe better than more than 99% of the people) in their ability in case that you do a competition(in learning a foreign language or learning something else) in case that it is important for them to do well in the competition.

Most probably yes(of course not all of them and it is possible to have high IQ without playing chess).Hood wrote:Hi,
