Are there any free engines for Mac?

Post by Ponti »

I`m searching for free UCI engines that can be used for Mac under SCID (or Shredder Mac).

I think these are the best GUIs for Mac, at least when it comes to graphics... I don`t like Sigma's graphics, and there`s no Arena or Chessbase for Mac... :-(

I`m also searching for a replacement to Pocket Chess Deluxe for Palm... a software that can handle many .pgn games and compatible with windows x64 bits (XP or Vista). Is there such a software?

There is also Jose for the Mac.

UCI MAC engines (both free and commercial):

I think Tord also makes a GUI for the MAC (IIRC). Look here for that:

Hi.

I'm in the same situation as you are. I have an iMac. There are great engines for the Mac, although not everything available for Windows is ported to Mac.

I use Scid and luckily you can compile your own version of a lot of engines. If don't don't mind using the so called "clones", you can download the sources for Robbolitto, Igorrit and IvanHoe and compile them. They are the strongest engines around and are easily compiled in Mac. 64 bits, multicore, etc.

As said earlier, you have Stockfish too. Ah, and Crafty is always nice to have, but it's not UCI.

For compiling all the engines, just download Xcode package from the Apple page (free).

I hadn't heard that Spark 0.3a had a Mac binary, thanks!

My favorite free Mac engines, in strength order:

Stockfish 1.7.1 (older versions including Glaurung all also worked great on the Mac)
(Robbolito 085g3 falls here, other derivatives don't compile or are unstable on the Mac)
(HIARCS 13.1b falls here, a good value for a commercial engine)
Rybka 2.3.2n2 + microwine
Toga II 1.4beta5c
Fruit 2.3.1
crafty 23.2
(scorpio 2.0 falls here, but crashes a lot)

Other engines like Hamsters and Homer are much weaker. I'll be looking at Spark and Umko shortly to see how they rate on the Mac.

Many of the open source programs mentioned in Leo's list are Windows only (Bison, for example), but most engines that compile on Linux will also work out of the box or with small changes on Mac OS X.

I find that Spark 0.3a is about as strong as Glaurung 2.2 or Toga II 1.4. Looking forward to a 0.4 binary.

Umko 0.9's default linux_x64 target compiles fine on the Mac, but there are apparently bugs in timekeeping. It always moves immediately unless I set it to think forever.
