Round 3 concludes with two blowouts of identical scores in Bracket D, with Rybka defeating Naum and Grapefruit beating the unlikely contender Cyrano, each by a 9-1 score.

So now we advance to Round 4, the "Elite Eight", or Quarter-finals, if you will. The pairings will be:

Bracket A: Ippolit vs. Thinker

Bracket B: Stockfish vs. Protector

Bracket C: Komodo vs. Spark

Bracket D: Rybka vs. Grapefruit.

The Quarter-finals matches will be Best of 24, so the first engine to 12.5 or 13 points will advance.

Bracket C is the toughest to call, but I'll bet on Komodo.

The Quarterfinals begin with a rout, as Ippolit crushes Thinker 13-3. Ippolit did not lose a game in this match; in fact, Ippolit has not lost a game yet in the first four rounds, compiling a stunning score thus far of 33.5-3.5, and a cumulative performance rating of 3167 (computed the simplified way).

So Ippolit is the winner of Bracket A, and earns a trip to the Final Four. Next up: Bracket B, which features Stockfish vs. Protector.

Another rout, as Stockfish claims the Bracket B title with a 13-4 drubbing of Protector. And like the Ippolit-Thinker match, Stockfish did not lose a game.

So Stockfish joins Ippolit in the Final Four. Maybe the next two matches, Komodo vs. Spark and Rybka vs. Grapefruit, will show a little more drama.

The Bracket C winner has been determined, and it is Komodo, who won in convincing fashion over Spark 12.5-6.5. Early in the match things were tight, but Komodo got hot and ran away with the match. So Komodo joins Ippolit and Stockfish in the Final Four.

Who will be the final entrant into the Final Four: Rybka or Grapefruit?

After this next match is over I'm going to try to get the games uploaded for the tournament so far for any who are interested.

The Quarterfinals are completed! Rybka made quick work of Grapefruit, winning 12.5-4.5. So now the Final Four is determined. Congratulations to Ippolit, Stockfish, Komodo, and Rybka.

Come buy your tickets now while quantities last! Grab a courtside seat for the inaugural chess March Madness Final Four! Get your hot dogs, popcorn, and beer and prop your feet up for what is sure to be an exciting couple of days.

The pairings will be: Ippolit vs. Komodo, and Stockfish vs. Rybka. Matches will be best of 30, so the first to 15.5 or 16 will be victorious. Later tonight I will try to upload the games of the previous rounds. As a reminder, you can follow the brackets and results at: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key= ... l=en#gid=0

Here are the games of Round 2 through 4. I uploaded them with Google docs "share folder" feature. Round 1 needs a little work, but I will try to get those uploaded later.

All the files have the following naming convention: Rx-Yn, where "x" is the round number, "Y" is the bracket, and "n" is the highest seed of the two match participants. In Round 4 there was only one pairing per bracket, so they just have the format Rx-Y.

I may try to simplify my game saving strategy the next time I do this kind of thing.

IPPOLIT 16, KOMODO 6

Komodo managed to draw 12 times, but Ippolit won 10 games, while Komodo did not notch a victory. Ippolit continued its amazing unbeaten streak while making the finals of the inaugural March Madness. It now has a cumulative match score of 49.5-9.5.
