Dubois-Steinitz London 1862

Post by NATIONAL12 »

this is a famous game.
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.0-0 d6 5.d3 Nf6 6.Bg5 h6 7.Bh4 g5 8.Bg3 now here Steinitz played 8...h5 which was given !! not only at the time but accepted to this day i believe modern AN has said that white should decline the sacrifice as Dubois did.

now lets see what happens if sacrifice is accepted.the standard line given by ChessBase is

9.Nxg5 h4 10.Nxf7 hxg3

now there has been much written over the years here proving that accepting the sacrifice was ok for the draw.

i deceided i would have another look at this ChessBase line with R4 and big hardware.

9.Nxg5 h4 10.Nxf7 now i have found an improvement over move given by ChessBase unknown author

10...Qe7! 11.b4 Bb6 12.Nxh8 hxg3 13.hxg3 Qh7 14.Bf7+ Kd8 -0.80 which appears to show that Steinitz was correct if sacrifice was accepted he retains a slight advantage.

interested in others comments.
