This Crap Ought To Stop!

Post by geots »

Depending on the way you prefer to read threads, someone posts concerning a test of something he is running- it has 40 or 50 threads and usually almost all are his. It has gotten so bad the author of the post is answering his own questions. Or "results after game 5" next thread...."results after game 6", followed by next thread "here we have game 7 or round 7- it's all the same.

Now you have it so when it leaves page one, some hapless wanderer replies to it, bumps it back to page one, clearing off other matches that were posted 5 min. earlier- moving them to page 2. Or the author replies to dump his 75 threads back to page 1 so he can monopolize the whole subforum.

And I want to post a simple match result squeezed between 2 40-thread posts if I am lucky. Or it is on page 2 in 10 minutes after posting. Bullshit. I will either post the result and add a thread every 10 min. to bump it to the top of page 1 like the rest do, or find somewhere else to post results where everyone doesn't think being the center of attention is a goddam life and death matter. The hell with this.

And I don't need to be told to look at the page in another setting. I choose which I use- thread or flat. And you can count on it- the ones with 25 threads- 24 of which they posted- know goddam well what they are doing.

This adds a whole new meaning to "basement testing". I may try to squeeze results in somewhere tommorrow, then again I may never post any more results here. I sort of feel bad about my 1 or 2 threads getting in the way of all this vital information.

As if it wasnt already a total mess, now we have 40 threads with people arguing back and forth about the validity of the goddam engines. It just never ends- the sewage seeps from "General" into "Tournament" section. As if there were not already enough bullshit problems here. Christ!

I agree, some people do that and don't realize that they're just spamming everyone and that no one cares...
However, there is a way to reduce this disturbance: click the flat view button. I always use flat view, so as far as I am concerned, pollution is proportional to the number of threads, not the number of posts.

Well, I guess that Mr. Speight, in his usuall calm and rational way, is referreng to my posts about the SF v Ivan match.  A few things...

            -   I always use the "flat view" and so my thread is only 1 among the 20 or so that I see.  I never thought that I was "crowding out" or "bumping away" anyone else.

            -   I usually only post once a day (and if you go look, not even once in the last 2 days) and am in no way trying to be "always at the top" or "getting attention".  No one's post will be "on page 2 in 10 minutes after posting" due to my postings.

            -   I thought that people would like to have a chance to look at the games as they are being played, rather than just getting a file of all of them at the end.  With over 2100 views (unless I am also viewing them all day "to get attention") it seems that all those views can not be "some hapless wanderer", but are people that like to check in each day and see the progress of the match.

As I am not intending to "spam" or annoy the other members, please let me know if you consider the way that I post the match results to be a problem; if many people say that it is, I will discontinue the match updates.

Pal - most of us use flat view, so it's not an issue for us.

However, for those using thread view, it will always be a problem no matter what, so it's not worth worrying about in my opinion (and that's no disrespect intended to George or others using thread view).
The general forum would be much more of a problem than this subforum for thread users, I would have thought.

The more members posting their results in here, the merrier has always been my stance. I seriously doubt that anybody is small minded enough to deliberately try and dominate with their posts.

A great big thanks for your post and the games Pal. Wishing you would post results a bit more often. Great to see good games at long time control. Keep up the good work.

Best,
Gerold.

P.S. I don't think he was referring to your posts.

I suspect that George was referring to the general situation. He was both unhappy with long threads like yours and a few others, but also the fact that some like myself tend to post more results than others.

However, it's certainly not a competition and I would like to think that everybody's results (including George's) are appreciated by those interested in them.

Hi pal. Not long ago I mentioned something to Gerold about the short distance from where each of us live, and us thinking a lot alike, maybe because of that. Probably that is why he pegged it perfectly. No, I was not referring to you, and I seriously apologize to you for any way that may have hurt your feelings. You do excellent work, as do others. It may be hard for you to understand, but I never even thought about you when making the post. Number 1- your motives are clear and ok with me, and number 2- you don't make a career out of it. Going back and looking at your threads, I can see how you would surely think I was referring to you. But I was not. I had something completely different on my mind. Again, sorry for any hurt feelings I may have caused. I too enjoy your work.

As for being brutally honest about an issue- I usually am. Because life is too short to stutter around, and if I don't say it to the person- it won't get said. Because I refuse to say it behind their back. Does it create problems at times- probably.

Certainly the best to you,

george

Again, I too enjoy your work.
