Visual Studio 2012 Express

Post by Engin »

Visual Studion 2012 RC is out, but why the ultimate or profesional versions are still compatible with Windows 7, and the Express version is only available for Windows 8 ??

isn't that strange ?

It is assumed that this version is to develop programs for the new platform.

There are also programs for Win 7, Visual Studio 2012 RC con Microsoft compiler version 110,

including Spanish,:D

and work with intel compiler tricks.

I like the old but still. :D

My understanding is the Express edition is only intended for development of Metro applications (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows ... 29512.aspx). That's why it is Windows 8 only.

The express versions were always crippled because they want you to purchase the full product.

I have both VS2008 and 2012RC installed on my development machine.
The compiler from 2012RC is actually producing somewhat slower code and it is not possible to integrate the Intel compiler/tools into the new programming environment yet. That's why I'll stick with VS2008 for the time being.

VS2010 I never liked because it's interface is slow like molasses.

right, i dont like to be forced to purchase an product, thats my decision.

i am still stay to using the 2008 and 2010 express edition on 2 different PC's too, had installed the 2012 RC for testing but i do'nt like the style and even the compiled code is not the fastest then the pre-released ones.

There is also a problem between using both the NET Framework 3.5 and 4.x, i didnt get display in 2008 the project options, because i have Network 4 installed and the old 3.5 doesnt work.

Other problem is the Intellisense for C++/CLI projects, in 2008 that was worked and in 2010 thats disabled, now in 2012 they are works again, really silly team...

Now i am waited for 2012 express to use it also in Win 7, but they make stupid decision thats only works in Win 8, the full products like Ultimate is still work on Win 7 , why not for express too ?

Agreed, I use VS2010 pro, and every three months or so, a complete reinstall is required. It starts hanging, getting slower and slower.

However, the IDE is still the best IMHO. :)

I use Visual Studio 2010, and recognize that it is demanding on resources.

But since you expand the memory to 8 gigabytes on my AMD Phenom x4, I have no problems.
I can run Fritz, two browsers, multiple instances of Visual Studio at a time, with multiple open files, no problems.

In the old computer if it was an ordeal.
This all goes well.

alternatives

Post by jdart »

You can download the Windows 7 SDK, if you are comfortable using the command line to compile:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... px?id=8279.

There's also cygwin gcc and MinGW, both of which can build Windows native apps. They are good free alternatives and in fact the compiler is probably better than the MS Express edition.
