The Beasts of Chess 3

Post by Alibaba »

Hi,

i play a series of tournaments of strong chess engines at very long time controls, without opening books, but starting from special interesting positions. The series of tournaments are called "The Beasts of Chess".
Main goal of the tournaments is not finding out which engine is the strongest, or making a rating list, but to find out more about the interesting starting positions, check if the main lines are correct, and so on...

Starting position of The Beasts of Chess 3 tournament is the open spanish:

[d]r2qkb1r/2p2ppp/p1n1b3/1p1pP3/4n3/1B3N2/PPPN1PPP/R1BQ1RK1 b kq - 0 9

Conditions:
CPU: i7 2600 3,4 Ghz without HT
Time controls: 40m in 180min then 40m in 120min then 30min + 15s
Cores: single engines use 1 core, MP engines use 2 Cores
Ponder: ON
Hash: 32-bit: up to 2GB, 64-bit: 4GB
TB: all 5 pieces on SSD

Some games with live broadcast on chessbase server...

Hi,

in round 5 Critter 1.6a is in big trouble vs Houdini 1.5a.
Critter played the 10. g6 followed by 11 Bg7 defense again, and after the pawn sacrifies with 12. Nd4 he is in trouble. So this line seems to be very bad for black....

here is the boad position:

[d]5k1r/5p1p/p1bq2p1/1p3P2/1Pp1r1N1/2P3R1/P5PP/2QR2K1 b - - 0 37

The black position (Critter) is totally lost

If the goal is to analyze the position, the standing is not very interesting. How about the position itself, from a chess point of view or from a computer chess point of view?

For me it is interesting that the e5 pawns it's already at its position, up to the final (in one posted diagram) sustained by f pawn. This a chess point of view (maybe a master could give more interesting comment). From a computer chess point of view... it is interesting that a the program "choose" to sustain the e5 pawn.

Those are poor comments, because i'm nor a strong chess player nor a strong chess programmer... but this is wath i think we should expect, from this experiment.

Hi,

a interesting game of round 6, Deep Fritz 13 vs Houdini 1.5a is running at the moment.

Houdini played the bad 10. ..g6 System but Fritz did not play the strong 12. Nd4 refutation (like Junior) so houdini managed to get a defenable position....

here is the board position at the moment:

[d]5rk1/3r1p1p/2pq1Pp1/1pnpR3/p4PP1/2P1Q2P/PPB5/3R2K1 b - - 0 27

you can kibitz the live broadcast on playchess

enjoy the game
