I see that Carlsen played the Ponziani the other day. I wonder whether this tournament helped him in any way?M ANSARI wrote:Wow impressive run by H3, especially when you consider its score is against the top opponents. Who would have believed only a few years ago that so many strong engines would be able to play on 8 cores.

Yes, I was thinking that, and seeing your post finally gave me the impetus to check the Ponziani db. The position after 9. 0-0 was played in BugCHess-RobboLito and Sting-Rybka, and both eventually ended as draws with 9...Bc5 being chosen. Carlsen's opponent played the reasonable 9...Be7, but then deviated with 11...Nc5, a 'novelty' that was probably not the best move, and not even a novelty at that, as it had been played in Basman-Masters, 1-0, way back in 1963 (!).Graham Banks wrote:I see that Carlsen played the Ponziani the other day. Carlsen is big on computer chess. It's not outlandish to think that he may have been aware of your tournament.

http://www.theweekinchess.com/chessnews ... el-with-79"It was a surprise someone would actually play the Ponziani against me." - Carlsen who used it as a surprise weapon against Harikrishna in round 4. Carlsen said that maybe she was thinking of the russian chess saying about trying not to play against your own openings and hoped that this might make him uncomfortable.
Cheers,
