SMP problem with Gaviota 0.86

Post by reflectionofpower »

I can't get beyond 1 core to activate? I thought at first I'll go into parameters and change it which I can but it still stays at 1 core. M running an i7 3630 with Windows 8.

Edit the ini file and set the number of threads there as well. Might fix the problem. You shouldn't have to do that, but if it fixes the problem for you then....

Just tested this and got the same problem. Does not appear to be related to Fritz 13, because I'm getting the same behaviour in Arena. eg After changing the number of cores from 1 to 4, the output is almost identical, same nodes searched, same NPS etc.

Setting the number of threads in the ini file worked for me. NPS increased by a factor of around 2.4.

Theoretically the ini file should be disregarded when it is running in UCI mode, but on some engines the ini file sets the default UCI parameters. Which then should be able to be successfully changed in the GUI of course...

I have no experience of Gaviota as UCI, I have always run it as a winboard engine in ChessGUI.

Have you checked what NPS you are getting? In my case I am getting about 800,000 NPS in the opening on my i7-2600k on a single core. When I give Gaviota 4 cores I get approximately 2,300,000 NPS. But in either case Fritz 13 displays Gaviota as using just 1 CPU.

I have a Windows 7 machine, but it's getting late so I cannot test this until tomorrow, but the evidence seems to point to a problem with Gaviota running in UCI mode under Windows 8.;

To Miguel, please disregard my earlier posts in this thread, I have reset the ini file to the default settings, deleted and reinstalled Gaviota 0.86 in both Fritz 13 and Arena as UCI. Now everything seems to be working smoothly. I cannot explain the earlier behaviour or help the OP, but it seems I was hasty to suggest the problem was Windows 8 related.

Fritz 13 still showing 1 CPU used however, even when NPS and Task Manager clearly show otherwise.
