Hi Julien,

I tried installing Sting SF 3VE om both Shredder and Scid on my Lion.
I get to hear that the engine is not an UCI one and on Scid also that some fields should be Bold (??).

Then i tried Igorrit and Ivanhoe, with the same story.
Funny, as all your older compiles work fine with Lion.
Did you change something?

Cheers,
Kaj

Hi Kaj :)

That's weird: Sting 3 ran perfectly in my tournament under cutechess-cli :
http://www.talkchess.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=49152

But I didn't test it with a GUI. I'll go see about that.

Regarding Igorrit and Ivanhoe, they compiled finely and running then thru a few UCI commands went well also, but when I tried to get them into my tournament they both left saying "capitalist multicore detected" or something... I'll inquire about that.

Today, the opposite happened to me: I bought Deep Junior 13 and the first thing I did was to run it in the terminal... It crashed with a segmentation fault. Then I tried it in HIARCS Chess Explorer and Scid Vs Mac, and it worked perfectly. I have no explanation for that. (I have a core i7 MacBook Pro under Mountain Lion.)

I'll inquire further.

Ok, I re-compiled Igorrit while fixing a little thingie. It works in the terminal, in HIARCS Chess Explorer and in Scid Vs Mac. Could you please re-download it and try again ?

(Note: check that the exe's date is of today's, as my host's server is cached you might end up downloading the same file you did yesterday...)

Ok, Ivanhoe should be working as well. It had the same "bug" (?) Igorrit had: a void function that was trying to return something. I made it an int function and it seems to work well now... (If an author of those engines reads this ?)

@Kaj:

I checked, and Sting 3 runs fine in my interfaces as well... Are you sure it doesn't work on your computer ? What is the CPU of your Mac? (PS: Igorrit and Ivanhoe are compiled with POPCNT and Prefetch.)

Thanks, Julien.

But...I now get "not a UCI engine" by Shredder and Hiarcs Explorer and "internal error" followed by a freeze in Scid.
This goes for all the 3 engines.

My Macbook Pro has an Intel I7 quad core processor.

Funny this, as all of your older stuff works great.

Cheers,
Kaj

I don't know what to tell you, Kaj: I just downloaded Igorrit from my repository and tried it in HIARCS Chess Explorer (HCE), and it works perfectly... Bot Igorrit and Ivanhoe are currently running in one of my tournaments, and after about 40 games each they didn't crash a single time:

Code: Select all

<...snip...>
Finished game 377 (RainbowSerpent-2.3.1 vs TogaII-3.1.2): 0-1 {Black mates}
Started game 388 of 760 (Umko-0.3.0.1 vs Igorrit-0.086v2)
Finished game 383 (IvanHoe-Beta-999966 vs Kenny-0.1.1.0): 1-0 {White mates}
Started game 389 of 760 (DiscoCheck-4.3 vs Rocinante-2.0)
Finished game 382 (Kenny-0.1.1.0 vs IvanHoe-Beta-999966): 0-1 {Black mates}
Started game 390 of 760 (Rocinante-2.0 vs DiscoCheck-4.3)
Finished game 380 (TogaII-3.1.2 vs RainbowSerpent-2.3.1): 1-0 {White mates}
Started game 391 of 760 (DiscoCheck-4.3 vs Rocinante-2.0)
Finished game 379 (RainbowSerpent-2.3.1 vs TogaII-3.1.2): 0-1 {Black mates}
Started game 392 of 760 (Rocinante-2.0 vs DiscoCheck-4.3)
Finished game 385 (Igorrit-0.086v2 vs Umko-0.3.0.1): 1-0 {White mates}
Started game 393 of 760 (DeepJunior-13.3 vs TogaToy-1.0)
<..snip...>
And Sting 3 did well also in my tournament yesterday. I also have a Macbook Pro with a Core i7, and Mountain Lion (maybe the only difference between our configurations?)

Hopefully another Mac user on the forum will download them and try them, and tell us how it's going on his machine...

[edit] a difference with my previous compiles is that I used gcc 4.7 instead of gcc 4.8, because the later has an annoying bug. Could you try to run them in a terminal and tell me what it tells you ? Here's what you have to do:
- open a terminal and drag & drop one of the engines in it (or double-click on an engine)
- enter the following commands: "uci", "ucinewgame" and "go depth 15".

Could you please also check Igorrit's creation date and size? They should be "yesterday : 11:46 pm" and "303 764 byes (307 Kb on the disk)".

Hi Julien,

This is what terminal gives when throwing Sting into it:
192:~ kajsoderberg$ /Users/kajsoderberg/Downloads/StingSF3VE/StingSF3VE ; exit;
Illegal instruction: 4
logout

[Process completed]

The size and date of Igorrit is fine.

Maybe i need to upgrade to Mountain Lion ;-)

Cheers,
Kaj

Thanks Kaj. I'm a bit clueless, because we have the same hardware. So there can't be an "illegal instruction." But later this afternoon I'll prepare several different builds for Sting3 so you can try them. This is quite weird...
