Why did Stockfish, who has been on top vs the best, do so mediocre now?
It's not just statistics, because the opposition was also much lower and this should never have happened even in ONE sample of games.

Is it simply because it was a weaker version?

(perhaps it wasn't necesary to put in the best version because it wasn't necesary, just to win this stage?)

Gull got a free half point against Hannibal, so Gull had the same performance than Critter, and one point above SF. Nothing than rolling the dice cannot explain.

Hard to fathom, if that's the ONLY reason.
Still, oh! It DID have a loss!
Nah!
No good!

I don't really like statistics. I just like quality and reliability of moves.
Otherwise it's just like me, having an argument about a complicated chess position with gary kasparov, and it turning out that i was right and he was wrong, and no one being the slightest bit impressed because it was only statistics, and that normally HE is right. And then the same thing repeating itself a few weeks later (and no times in between) of me being right and he being wrong, because I'm allowed to win a chess argument with him in 2 times out of a hundred.
