FYI I believe the Merida, Berlin, etc. fonts are copyrighted. IIRC I got permission to use them a long time ago.

If you want scalability, then you have to go to fonts or to something like SVG. If you have a fixed set of board sizes (like Winboard/xboard) then you can get by with bitmaps.

The Tarrasch GUI (http://www.triplehappy.com/) has pretty nice graphics IMO. Not sure of the underlying tech.
