Something still seems wrong. I guess you did not use -DHAS_RT when compiling texel, as I don't think OSX has support for posix realtime extensions. In that case texel uses the c++11 std::chrono library to measure time. Maybe that is not accurate enough on OSX to play at 10ms increment.
Correct , no -DHAS_RT .

We use this in crafty OS X , seems to work pretty well for all unix flavors.

Code: Select all

unsigned int ReadClock(void) {

  struct timeval timeval;
  struct timezone timezone;
  gettimeofday(&timeval, &timezone);
  return timeval.tv_sec * 100 + (timeval.tv_usec / 10000);
}

I see. You initially wrote 0.1 sec inc so that's what I used. If I instead use 0.01s I get:

Code: Select all

Rank Name Elo + - games score oppo. draws
   1 Texel105     75    5    5  5053   69%   -75   17%
   2 crafty250   -75    5    5  5053   31%    75   17%
So +150 elo for texel in my test, compared to -827 elo in your test. There were 0 time losses in my test. Did you get any time losses?

Stockfish uses std::chrono.

Thanks. It shows that there are no time losses but also shows that texel makes many mistakes that on my computer would have been found in 1ms. Unfortunately there is no time or depth information in the pgn file so it is hard to tell what goes wrong.

One possibility is that texel's startup time is large on your computer. On my computer it is less than 10ms as seen by this bash command:

Code: Select all

time ./texel </dev/null

real    0m0.008s
user    0m0.006s
sys     0m0.003s
Can you please test this on your computer?

Another possibility is that texel's time measurement is not working correctly. If you start texel in a terminal window and type "go depth 10", what is the smallest non-zero reported time? Also if you start texel and type "go infinite", does the reported time increase at the correct speed? Note that time is reported in milliseconds in the UCI protocol.

For reference, on my computer "go depth 10" produced the following output:

Code: Select all

Thanks. There is no time information but from the depth information I would guess that texel uses its minimum thinking time of 1ms for most moves.

Since you mention xboard and xboard relies on polyglot to handle UCI engines, it is worth mentioning that polyglot needs a patch to handle sub-second increments. Without the patch UCI engines will think the increment is 0 if the real increment is less than one second.

pk the updated polyglot helps all uci engines in general

did discovered that neither xboard or the match program can run matches fairly at time control 0.6 seconds since they both only go down to 1 sec base so here's a mini with 1 sec base and .01 second inc

I would take a look at the Senpai code - it uses chrono, it is uci and it's cpp. It is apparently not impacted detrimentally at all by tc of 1 sec base and .01 increment

tc 1.8 sec base .03 sec inc
