Re: WCCC June 27th in Leiden
I see professor Bob getting quoted as author from GGG, is it supercrafty?
Yeah as for the games - here a few cents from a titled player with some experience in computerchess.
Very dull openings in most games. No nothing spectacular.
1.c4,c5 2.Nf3 then of course the best move is Nc6
As we already know from the 90s the system idea for black is to put the knight on e7 and blacks e5 + a5 system as Kramnik already played it in 90s still is dead draw today.
In the game Komodo - Hiarcs it seems that Hiarcs was too happy with the d4 passed pawn. In fact - white LIKES to play an endgame there and a bishop on c5 for black is the wrong colored bishop. Combination of a passer on d4 + bad bishop is a sure win for white. Complicating thing in that game is of course the doubled pawn on f-file for white.
Weird choice is to play Italian by 1 of the participants. In fact i did do a recent study of Italian to see whether there is 'vague possibilities for white' to complicate the game.
Read well: that's at IM level and not only for myself yet also for some other guys.
Any novelty or idea you find of course you hand to a world top player who can potentially fight for world title there.
Yet in Italian i found NOTHING. In fact a line i found came soon onto the board (a year ago or so by now) and was drawn hands down by Aronian having the black colors.
Really nothing there - very sad - as 3.Bc4 is a very logical move to play.
Scotch is more interesting there, as there is not much theory there. So even if you feel it's ok for black, white can still try a lot.
Todays engines score quickly scotch as ok for black - they underestimate whites structural advantage. That's the explanation i have why many todays players do not even try
Myself i play Slav with black. Interestingly a number of engines play it nowadays as well. This where already 10 years ago Arturo Ochoa had concluded that for sure Diep, yet also some other engines, play it completely wrong with both colors.
It is horrible to see how some engines play it with either color
Weird that Nimzo-Indian nowadays no longer is popular there - i still recommend it to youth players. Of course it's a LOT of theory. That's because it's such an interesting opening.
Popular in todays IM and GM praxis and what i get more and more against me is:
1.d4,d5 2.c4,c6 3.Nf3,Nf6 4.e3
That move is just total =
I have no idea why they play it. white has some practical chances - yet not theoretical ones. It would be weird to play lines like that in computerchess against well prepared opponents.
Myself i answer 4..g6 nowadays against it - yet that's a 100% win attempt from my side then - also objectively probably not the best
Managed to hit IM Miedema hard in that line previous season. Regrettably the final and 3d IM norm i needed to become IM i missed there in that Belgium league.
Yet a lot of lines that world top plays are just total dead = and they know it. Would be weird to copy them. With a computer you can play way more interesting things.
Not a very high openingslevel in computerchess -whereas engiens obviously are a lot stronger now.
It's just more of the same thing it seems...
Take some time to think over which opening to choose guys!

Re: WCCC June 27th in Leiden
En passant bug in Komodo?
1.d4 d5 2.e4 fxe4 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 Nc6 5.d5 Ne5 6.Qd4 Nf7 7.h4 e5?!
To me looks like dubious move. You just take on e6 en passant and whites (presumably bad position according to theory from 1990s) looks suddenly ok for white.
After 7..c6 - black is obviously much better.

Harvey Williamson wrote:To the mods you have not moved a post about Go in the last few days and Ed's poll shows members clearly in favour of these announcements being here so do the right thing and allow general discussion of this topic here, in the main section, with the games posted elsewhere - Thanks!
The WC starts in a couple of weeks. There is still time to enter. At the moment there will be a double round robin for the WC. A 6 round tournament for the World Computer Software Championship(played on = hardware)
So far we have:
Hiarcs
Komodo
Shredder
Cluster GinkGo will also play on >150 cores I am told
Jonny will play on even more cores!
Raptor
The Baron.
If this post is not moved I will report from the event daily. If the mods decide that they want to continue changing the way this forum has always been run reports will, only, be here http://www.hiarcs.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7855

Re: WCCC June 27th in Leiden
I had a wonderful time last year. I entered Maverick which is about 800 ELO weaker than Komodo. I had zero chance of winning but it was such a blast hanging out and chatting about űber-geeky stuff for a whole week. I'd also say everyone got along magnificently. Before the tournament I suspected there might be some "politics". I was wrong.Henk wrote:(...)
You normally would expect more participators like:
Texel
Andscacs
Nirvana
Vajolet
Although they probably would not have a chance to win the tournament.
I'd encourage anyone to enter if they can cobble together an engine.
I wish was there now - maybe (hopefully) next year!

Re: WCCC June 27th in Leiden
I was hoping you were right so we could gain some elo points by a simple bugfix. But no, there is no bug. Komodo evaluates the endgame after the queen trade as equal, whereas it shows a tiny White plus after 7...c6. You say "black is obviously much better" but my database stats favor White as does Komodo, and it's not at all obvious to me which side is better.diep wrote:En passant bug in Komodo?
1.d4 d5 2.e4 fxe4 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 Nc6 5.d5 Ne5 6.Qd4 Nf7 7.h4 e5?!
To me looks like dubious move. You just take on e6 en passant and whites (presumably bad position according to theory from 1990s) looks suddenly ok for white.
After 7..c6 - black is obviously much better.
Komodo rules!

I have the same question. Maybe we have to go to Leiden and find out. But perhaps they don't like disturbing spectators.mehmet karaman wrote:Is there anyone who knows the kn/s of Jonny (2400 core)
