"While grandmasters earn millions, the sport still can’t shake ties to tyrants and a leader under U.S. sanctions." says the caption.
The article is interesting and they show Woody Harrelson making the first move of Game 1. I didn't know that.

I was just quoting from the article. They stated Magnus makes over a million a year but obviously compared to the "old days" of chess you can make a tidy sum if you're in the top 10 in the world, below that could make a good living too.Ozymandias wrote:How many?reflectionofpower wrote:While grandmasters earn millions
How can you beat a living where you actually make good $$ in doing something that you love to do? The love for this game was always such that people played and hardly made anything and yet devoted their whole lives to it!

They still do, is my point. Away from the title candidates, many GMs struggle to make a decent living, out of chess.

The article just follows political agenda of State Department. It certainly has no place in this forum and moreover, nothing to do with computer chess!reflectionofpower wrote:https://www.bloomberg.com/features/2016 ... mpionship/

It is sadly true. There is something about sports federations that breeds corruption. For example, FIFA (soccer) - see http://www.worldpolicy.org/blog/2016/04 ... and-soccer. And UCI (cycling) is said to have covered up doping by athletes and there are allegations of bribery. Olympic boxing is said to be fixed (https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/ ... llegations) - and boxing in general is one of the dirtiest sports businesses.

USA global police propaganda. You are guilty of corruption if you have dealings with leaders of countries that have law and order in place that keep their radical segments of their population under strick control. Meanwhile USA locks up petty dealers that sell organic plant material.

Peter Leko's former coach once told me that only the top 20 can make a living solely from playing chess.reflectionofpower wrote:https://www.bloomberg.com/features/2016 ... mpionship/

Others make up the difference from a "normal" 9-5 by coaching and others only play part time due to work commitments.
On the other hand, like anything else in life, entrepreneurial savvy will get you somewhere.
I know an FM who makes over a million a year with a small business that teaches chess to kids in school.
Another 2400 GM makes 300k with his small coaching business, but only works a few days a week.
Meanwhile guys with 2700 ELO are starving...
This isn't wrong though, it's just.
But people need to understand that your trade is not what makes you valuable, it's your marketing ability or your ability to put yourself in front of a hungry audience.
I could teach any GM to earn a good living without working a 9-5.
It always (like many things in life) comes back to the "entitlement" vs "self-empowered" mentality of an individual.
About the "under U.S sanctions" stuff...
It's always wise to dig deeper.
A lot of what we think we know of the world is B.S.
Iran has not attacked another country since the 1700s, yet they're the first on many (who are under the spell of U.S MSM) people's list of "danger countries".
Why?
Because they'd like to sell their oil (their own national asset) on their own terms...they don't want to trade oil in U.S dollars because it only benefits America.
Neither did Libya and look what happened... Look it up, its all true.

Why should everyone be able to do that? The cashiers in supermarkets probably don't think that pulling things over a scanner is a life-fulfilling activity.reflectionofpower wrote:How can you beat a living where you actually make good $$ in doing something that you love to do?
