Looking for DOS driver ... IOMEGA ZIP 100 and Mouse!

Post by Frank Quisinsky »

Hi there,

I have interest to install over christmas my collection on DOS programs on a Pentium I 166MMx Notebook (32Mb RAM, 2.1GB HD, VGA Display and CDRom 10x). That Notebook I got as present ... and was never in using. Humorous ... the notebook is brand new. I am very happy with the old notebook because Anstoss 1 (football manager can be run too) ...

At the moment I installed MS DOS 6.22 and Norton Commander 3.0 I have on older floppy drives.

:-)

Most of copy protection engines from the good and old time I installed on Iomega ZIP 100 for using years later ... so I have all ... Hiarcs 1, all the MChess Versions and so one but I lost files on one of my backup CDs.

:-(

I have a Logitech PS/2 mouse and I know that the older Logitech driver works with lesser ram under DOS. Maybe a user with knowledge about it can send me a good mouse driver I can using. Furthermore, Iomega ZIP need a driver ... I believe guest.exe ... don't have it too and not easy to find in www. Sure here that one of the members can help.

Must see all the WChess, Kallistos ... Fritz 1 Knighstalker, CheckCheck, Tjes and much others I have in my collection.

On other Topic is ... xms and himem.sys.
I know that different engines needs x mode under DOS.

Honestly ... I lost my knowledge about x-mode and again ... my important configuration CD (can't read my older backup CD). In the past I am using a menu system from a russian programmer ... so I can boot with different DOS configuations (autoexec.bat and config.sys configurations). Maybe a user have here knowledge to give tipps.

Thanks and best ...
Back to the roots for myself ... and self playing.

I am sure on Pentium I 166Mhz Kallisto can play with 2.100, maybe 2.200 Elo. A good level for me.

I used to have batch files setup to have REbel,MChess etc run in himem mode. These instructions are in the manual I believe or you can try here:

Hi Frank,
I have a DOS 6.22 driver for PS2 mouse (perhaps Logitech).
It works for me.
Please, try it.
Where can I send it?

The DOSBox emulator can be installed in Windows or linux.
I have it installed in linux, and it runs old DOS versions of Fritz, Comet, Rebel, HIARCS and Chess Genius ok.
If your zip drive is USB, it does not need drivers for linux or Windows XP. I just tried mine, which had not been used for several years, and it worked ok.
If it is a parallel port drive that is more of a problem. I remember getting one of those to work in linux and also Windows 98 many years ago.

Hi Lonnie,

this helps!

In the night I am searching again and found a lot of examples for autoexec.bat and config.sys. After reading I remember on all that ... in the past I am using quem for further optimations.

I remember that Gandalf DOS needed more as 600.000 and two other older DOS engines.

Very bad that my older CD with DOS software isn't longer working. But more important is that the chess backup CDs working fine.

Thanks

Best
Frank

I downloaded the iomega file. Guest.exe is included. The file from Jose is also great (complete installation files). So I can looking which version is newer and maybe better.

Hi Colin,

my zip drive is defect too

:-(

I order yesterday a parallel ZIP 100 drive in ebay. Parallel for the older Notebook I have written before. DOS-Box I am using in the past but better is to have an older PC for it.

Example:
With DOS box sound isn't running with my older football manager or other things.

At the moment I collect all the material I need for DOS and on Christmas I will start my configuration orgy.
