Round 25
A00 - King's Indian Attack with Nh3

Game 49 was yet another colorless GM draw. With white pieces SF as usual tried harder and ended up with two isolated passed pawns on the queenside. If the bishops were the only pieces present this may have been a win for White; the rooks, however, ensured a draw.

Score after 50 games: 22-24 (+2-4=40 ?4)

Round 26
A01 - Nimzovich-Larsen Attack or
A06 - Reti?

Another pair of draws, the first being decidedly more interesting. It seems that Stockfish, usually so enterprising in the opening, falls somewhat short of expectations on the white side of the Reti/KIA systems. Here in game 52 it went for the win of a pawn, although it was quite clear that allowing a black rook on the second rank reduced its winning chances to zero.

Score: 23-25 (+2-4=42 ?4)

Round 27
A30 - Symmetrical English/Hedgehog

Game 53 is notable for a pair of successive moves that very few humans would ever think of in an actual OTB game: The Mysterious Rook Move - SF's 24...Rg8!? and Komodo's reply. Although I cannot claim to fully understand what the former was for, it appears that Black didn't want the rook boxed in by his own queen on a8. One idea for White was 25.Nd6 and the black queen has to get off the seventh rank - otherwise 26.Nxf7 wins a pawn (26...Kxf7? 27.Rd7+ +-) - hemming its own rook in.

Not to be outdone, Komodo immediately countered with another purely engine move, 25.b4. Perhaps the idea was to induce 25...cxb4 and thus prevent the black knight from ever securing an outpost on d4; but doesn't 25...Nxb4 simply win a pawn? Not according to the engines who both continue with the still more counter-intuitive 26.f4 (?!?) and claim a plus for White after 26...Qxe4+ (two pawns up) 27.Kf2. This particular patzer admits to being thoroughly out of his depths.

In the game SF ignored the audacious pawn jab and the game soon reached a level rook+pawns endgame.

Coming out of the book in game 54 Stockfish improved on Komodo's inane 9.Nxc6 with the much more thematic 9.Nbd5, staying in the Hedgehog territory (note that both engines reached d=35 to arrive at these choices). Straight away Black faced solving difficult problems and his first independent move 9...Na5 can hardly be commended. After 10.e4 it turns out that the c4 pawn is untouchable: 10...Nxc4? 11.e5 hitting the f6 knight and b7 bishop at the same time gives White a huge, probably winning advantage. Thus the opening netted SF the control of the center, a hole on d6 to latch on to and a black knight on the rim. Then Komodo invited a pawns storm with ...f6 and ...h6; and by move 30, although the material was still even, there was little doubt about the game's outcome.

A splendid positional win for Stockfish after a dry run of 22 draws (23 if you include the unfinished 35th game). With the match a little past the midpoint some conclusions can already be drawn: although Komodo succeeded in matching (and sometimes even exceeding) SF's search depth, and while it scales a bit better NPS-wise on 16 cores there are some deficiencies in its decision-making process that repeatedly let it down.

Score: 23.5-26.5 (+2-5=43 ?4)

Re: Komodo 10.3 vs. Stockfish 170102 16-core 60m+6s 100 game

Post by tpoppins »

Stockfish won (who would have thought? ;).
I've been a bit overloaded in RL in the past two weeks but am still determined to finish what I started.

Round 28
A10 - English vs. 1...b6

This pair of games features a peculiar opening line where White aims to counter Black's early queenside fianchetto with a kingside one, and Black attempts to throw a monkey wrench in White's setup by exchanging his b7 bishop for the white knight on f3 before the white bishop gets to g2. I've seen a similar idea with reversed colors in one of Petrosian's games from the 50s (it could have been Korchnoi, though). In that game Black got a permanent gaping hole on d5 and was gradually strangulated. In this particular situation, though, Black doesn't get a chance to get a firm grip on d4 so the whole line appears dubious strategically.

In game 55 Stockfish tried to compensate for the strategical deficiencies of Black's position with tactical tricks and it's remarkable to see Komodo outfox the ply-burner at its own game with a temporary piece sacrifice (15.cxd5). Eight moves later Black's kingside was in tatters, with the white bishop clearly superior in the wide-open position to the black knight without support points in the center. On move 24 Komodo avoided an exchange of the queens (something Drawfish has a particular penchant for) and opted for increasing the pressure instead. By move 35, following a series of clever zwischenzugs, White achieved simplifying into a highly advantageous QBPPPPvsQNPPP endgame. Komodo works slowly by surely - by move 80 the game was not finished yet, however with White a pawn up in a queen-and-pawn endgame the outcome can hardly be in doubt.

In game 56 Komodo surprisingly went in for a half-baked kingside attack along the h-file. By move 20 it was clear that it was getting nowhere; meanwhile White's superiority in the center and on the queenside netted him a pawn by move 23. Black's attempts to fish in troubled waters were in vain (note in particular White's cool-headed 29.Qd3, 31.gxf4 and 38.Qd2), and the game was strategically decided by the time White acquired two connected passed pawns on the queenside. Komodo gets an applause for reproducing on move 37 Alekhine's mind-boggling ...Re3! from his immortal encounter with Reti at Baden 1925, though. ;)

Re: Komodo 10.3 vs. Stockfish 170102 16-core 60m+6s 100 game

Post by tpoppins »

Round 29
A00 - Sokolsky/Orangutang

Both engines give Black a tiny edge for this opening line. With White in game 57 Komodo once again picked the odd-looking 9.Bd3 we have seen earlier in the match (albeit in a different opening variation), placing the bishop in front of its d-pawn. Black exchanged his dark-squared bishop for the c3 knight to prevent it from ever jumping on d5 and to spoil the white queenside. Nevertheless Komodo had things under control once it maneuvered the bishop to that square. He cleverly sidestepped Black's attempt at a kingside pawn storm with 25.e4 and a couple of moves later unexpectedly voluntarily exchanged his well-posted d5 bishop to get counterplay along the d-file. On move 33 White pushed e5 to clarify the situation in the center; Black had a surprise of its own prepared, in form of a queen sacrifice (well, more of a trade for two rooks). The resulting endgame where White had a protected passed d-pawn would look promising to a human, however the engines' evals never strayed far from zero.

Game 58 was rather less eventful. Stockfish opted for the more conventional 9.Rc1 and succeeded in planting the knight on d5 - only to exchange it shortly for that same black dark-squared bishop. A short sharp skirmish followed and resulted in all pieces but the queens exchanged by move 26.

Re: Komodo 10.3 vs. Stockfish 170102 16-core 60m+6s 100 game

Post by tpoppins »

Round 30
E01 - Catalan / Double Fianchetto vs. Slav Triangle

A quiet positional line that promises prolonged heavy-weight jockeying for position. In game 59 Komodo was just preparing to start exploiting Black's crooked pawn formation in the center when Stockfish unleashed two startling shots one after another - 18...f4! and 19...e3. The ensuing short melee ended in what is probably one of the craziest positions to be assigned the 0.00 eval (by both engines, at that):

[d]r3b1k1/1pb3pp/2p1p3/p1P1NP1n/P2r3q/1P3P2/1BQ1P1BP/4RRK1 w - - 0 24

It's hard to imagine a draw resulting from such a position in a game between human players, but there you have it - a draw. asmFish from Jan 28 reports 0.00 all the way to d=51.

Game 60 saw SF opt for diverting the f3 knight to the edge of the board to delay Black's coming ...e5. Nevertheless six moves later Komodo boldly carried it out all the same, the pin on his queen notwithstanding. The pinned e5 pawn soon fell, which didn't seem to bother Black who didn't waste time attempting to recapture it but initiated play elsewhere and eventually infiltrated the white camp with his rooks. By move 31 SF got tired of defending passively and abandoned the extra e5 pawn to seek chances elsewhere. Black didn't allow him any such chances and after some shuffling about a draw was agreed.

Score: 25.5-29.5 (+2-6=47 ?5)

Round 31
A00 - Sokolsky/Orangutan

My, there are a lot of 1.b4 lines in this book! But this one cannot be serious chess, can it?

[d]rnbqk2r/p4pbp/4pnp1/1ppP4/PP2pP2/2N2N2/2P3PP/R1BQKB1R w KQkq - 0 9

This is the position the engines get out of the book. I have no idea what GM games Adam picked it from or how the line survived Lucas' filtering but there are no games in Megabase 2017 featuring this position. Would there have been any surprise if Black had won both games? The only surprise is that Komodo playing black in game 62 failed to convert a -0.80 advantage in the middlegame to a win.

Re: Komodo 10.3 vs. Stockfish 170102 16-core 60m+6s 100 game

Post by tpoppins »

Round 32
A20 - English 1...e5

Game 63 is a nice positional demonstration by Komodo. A couple of small mistakes by Black (22...Qd8?!, 28...Be7) and White won a pawn on the queenside and, with rooks on board, the opposite-colored bishops didn't help Black.

Score: 27.5-31.5 (+3-7=49 ?5)
