Post by Frank Quisinsky »

It would be even more interesting to reveal why it promoted to a Bishop at all :)

Hi Guenther,

yes, I am looking yesterday in stalemate and underpromotion games from my still running tourney!
Found the two games by Minic.

The Minic programmer is a very friendly men.

Maybe he is thinking:
With KNB vs. K my program can not give mate, so underpromotion to that endgame constellation will give my opponent a little gift, a draw.

That's applied psychology!!

Because in the next game Nemorino is thinking ...
I have sure a draw vs. Minic but then ...

Minic will win!
A human trick, psychology pure.
KI, new art of KI ...
Now a lot of people will purchase the next grafic card.

Looking what Shredder GUI are thinking:
Book moves to the end of the game.
Again ... psychology pure!

Programmers are working with such tricks, I know that from "Chessbase GUI's" and self playing games vs. chess programs.

:-)

Hi, I'm very surprised by the issue. Minic never had problem with those kind of mate before and I cannot reproduce here with KR or KBN.

I don't understand this "book" move for end game thing ? Why is there "book" written in the pgn in late endgame ?

The underpromotion to a bishop is an "assumed" bug. This is due to the fact that KNB vs K is tagged as a sure win while KQB vs K is just score by material difference. This is intended to be some kind of funny end-game stuff !

But here it totally back fire ! I wonder if Minic is extremely low on time maybe here ? Because even before the under promotion the mate with a Q is so close that it shall be seen already... Minic 2.33 here find the mate in 23ms single thread at depth 21 ...

Are syzygy activated here ?

[ENGINE]

Filename=C:\Chess\Shredder_12\Engines\Minic\Minic_233-x64.exe
[OPTIONS]
Contempt=0
ContemptMG=0
SyzygyPath=c:\Chess\_syzygybases

My Shredder GUI configuration file.
Minic isn't alone with "book" moves to the end of the game.

I am not sure with Shredder GUI problem or not.
UCI engines runs perfect under the "Mother GUI" from UCI developer Stefan Meyer-Kahlen.

After around 2.3 Million of games I produced with Shredder GUI I think I can say that.

From 41 participate FCP Tourney-2020 engines it seems that 3 or 4 give often "book" moves to the end of the game.

Ed like Arena I think :-)
I know Arena :-)

Ed is thinking the problem comes from the "Mother-UCI-GUI Shredder".
I believe more that the engine produced a problem if 99% from all engines I know not produced the same problem!

Best
Frank

PS: Can be easy check.
Please start a 100 games match vs. an other engines.
Type "debug" ...

Shredder produced a perfect debug file!

I see your Minic executable is named "Minic_233-x64.exe". Did you rename it by yourself ?. It is really Minic downloaded from my github repo ?

Here is an example of Minic driving another engine to the opposite corner with white 10s/40move and black 0.1s/40moves.
The idea with very short TC for black is that mate promoting to queen is not seen and thus promotion to B occurs (as for Minic KBNvK looks easier than KQBK ...)

And the issue with KRvsK is even more weird ! Again same imbalanced TC to put black in difficulty, Minic mates without issue.

Also works well with my syzygy activated. I really wonder what is going on here...

Your tourney is with 5s increment so that Minic always have some time to play. We can verify in your given pgn that Minic plays the end-game at around 4s per move while the opponent seems to play instantly in both case (another strange behavior).

More over you saw many Minic issues during the tourney, crashing in late-end-game on lost positions. To avoid this I always test Minic versus others engines until mate (I never adjudicate), and I have no such issue in my pgn results. This is another strange thing.

I really wonder how to investigate this further.

Another thing

Code: Select all

113... Rh7 -99.83/17 6s
This is very hard to believe that Minic takes 6s to reach depth 17 with only KRK on the board !

Are you totally sure that the cpu running this tourney is totally free from other solicitations ? or the hard drive serving syzygy ?

Hi,

I am absolutely sure that all works fine here.
A complete new PC with SSD and Windows 10 Prof, here only the chess programs are running.

Again, Minic isn't working alone on the PC.
40 other programs are in the toruney and all works fine here.

Yesterday in the evening I checked all the games, longer as 140 moves for problems.
I found only the two Minic games.

OK, Schooner have a problem with Shredder GUI.
Games longer as 203 moves are not possible and Schooner do nothing.

The only two problems I have here ...
Schooner programmer wrote about it in TalkChess.

Maybe I produced the Minic a problem with my hash-settings (768Mb for each of the engines)?
Maybe a problem with Fischer time control?

Syzygy directory is fully OK.

Best
Frank

PS: Possible that I rename your engine! But this should not produced the errros.
EXE: 1.894.400 bytes, of course I download engines from the site of the programmers!

Sure if you start a 100 games match with Shredder GUI and debug you will find it.

How many concurrent games on how many physical cores is running. What is the total available RAM on the PC?

Why do you think I shall find something in Shredder gui? I have all the debug I want from cutechess or xboard. Do you think interaction with the gui can be the root cause?

How do you explain the weird points I gave? Engine playing instantly, minic not reaching high depth in end game.

If there is something wrong with Minic I really want to fix it!
